Hello everyone,
I’m a 24 year old Paramedic out here in MD. I just applied for a job in Henderson Fire Dept. I have done a good amount of research into the dept such as make up of the dept, size and so on. Talked to a few people who have worked for the dept and they seem to like their job pretty well.

Wanted to get a citizens view of the dept. I know its hard for a citizen to really begin to describe the workings of the fire dept. But might give good insight on how well they interact with the community. Any input on your dealings or friends who work with the dept.

If I was to be hired I would believe I would be moving to the area in Mid summer. Not planning to buy anything right away and will probably live in an apartment for several months till I graduate the academy. So I’m not looking on much input as to where to live.

Last question I have is about cost of living. Everybody I talk to out here when I say “I’m thinking about taking a job out in Vegas…….” They always come back with “well isn’t the cost of living extreme out there?” I have looked on the net at the housing market and it seems to be significantly less than here. The salary I would be making with the Fire Dept is around 60k a year base and obviously there will be OT.

So what I’m asking is can someone who makes that kind of salary afford to buy a house in the 230k market and still be able to afford to live in the area? This is a question I believe only someone who currently lives in the Vegas area would be able to answer.

Thank you so much for any responses you as a reader provide.

Russ
