Heck...even the homeless do it 0$ - $5k per year! Some even sleep right in their cars...but those are the lucky ones.

i dunno much about short term rentals here, but did you check craigslist? that is how i found my place (but i rent long term). you might be able to rent a room or sublet from someone.

to address your q's, i can give you my experience so far (been here 4+months). for a frame of reference: i am single, making 45K/year. i live in one of the downtown neighborhoods (huntridge), renting a pretty nice 3 bd house. i'm not flush w/ cash by any means, but i am def not hurting for it (and thats including the big chunk o' change that goes into my retirement fund). i feel very safe in my neighborhood, although the guy down the street did just have his ATVs stolen, trailer and all.

you will absolutely need a car here if you chose to live on the outskirts and/or if you really want to enjoy all the area has to offer (spring mts, red rock, lake mead, etc.). if you are working downtown, i suggest checking out downtown living before you dismiss it (esp/ if you want to see how the other half lives). i can (and do) walk to the downtown bars, and am a very short cab ride to the strip....both important if you want to play downtown w/o the problem of getting back to the burbs.

here are some thread re: things to do.
