This is an ignorant thread to start with and has only gone downhill with ignorant posts.

Why?

It's obviously struck a chord.

Why wouldn't they be HERE (Culinary), like almost all the other hotel employees? That would be an interesting carve out. I would think HERE would have a big problem with that.

Actually, I think the porters are part of the housekeeper's union. Their uniforms are much closer to housekeeping than culinary where I work at least. The bathroom attendants certainly have no collective bargaining. Seriously, can you imagine the casino's derisive gales of laughter if the United Brotherhood of Bathroom Attendants threatened a strike?

"You say you'll take your napkins and go home? Well, OK. We'll miss you!"

Housekeeping and porters are part of the Culinary 226 along with cocktail servers and bell staff.

Then I've learned something today. Everyone at work acts as if the housekeepers have their own union deal going on. For instance, when the strike was looming, the scuttlebutt around work was that a strike would only work if the housekeepers joined in. The rational being that chefs can work 100-hour weeks and limp the food out until the strike peters out. But it is impossible to run a casino without housekeepers.

Regardless, this has little to do with attendants who pass out napkins. And it's understood that union stewards slacking off in the bathroom can only be fired if they show up for work drunk, punch a guest in the face, or similar.

Well, I started the thread so I can say what I intended to talk about. Just look at the title. What does it say? Creepy Janitors. You can use the word porters. Creepy Janitors/Porters. I even posted a photo of a fine specimen posted at the wall, not cleaning just keeping watch over men doing their business.

Yes, there are also Bathroom Attendants and they are a bit different. The difference is that while Janitors have a legitimate purpose/value to provide by cleaning (without intruding guests' privacy by camping out/standing watch in the bathroom 24/7 of course) - Attendants do not and invade guests privacy without offering anything of value. BTW I "love" how many attendants offer acetaminophen-based medications such as Tylenol to drunk/drinking people - I wonder how many livers have been damaged as a result. When I saw Tylenol as one of their "goodies" - I thought "are you f-ing serious?"

I think everyone is clear on the distinction between the two by now.

if you honestly believe that unions - ESPECIALLY culinary 226 - still have any teeth whatsoever you are sorely mistaken

I have seen plenty of female Walmart greeters.

Women's restrooms in upper end establishments sometimes have attendants....a throwback to the old days, when you could go in and on the counter there would be hand lotion, mints, purfume, hairspray, feminine hygiene products, maybe a lipstick or powder (yuck....), (all purchased at the attendant's expense) and she would probably have a sewing kit to fix your hem, or help you get a stain off your dress, stuff like that.

Since all women's primary bathroom functions are performed behind closed doors in the stall, they don't creep me out at all. I don't avail myself of their services, and get my own towel.

I understand that there's a kind of "urinal etiquette" in men's rooms and if these attendants are there watching you watering the grass, then yes, I would be creeped out.
