Hi all,

We have a 1850sf home here and I got my gas bill $125 last month where it was $46 the month before and around that for the month before that.

I called SW Gas and they said it was normal when you have 2 furnaces ( upstairs and downstairs ) in the winter. You should expect the gas bill hike even if you keep the thermostat in the 68-70 degree range.

No fireplace is running. We do use the stove burners a lot and normal laundry gas dryer.

I've only been here since last summer and don't have a history for cold weather gas costs.

Anyone else paying that much ?

Best, LA Guy

Haven't got a winter bill yet, but yep, I have seen that type of increase. Like you, I am from California and it took my breath away when I first saw it. Now I have just come to expect it. My home isn't super energy efficient and I don't own so I can't make any changes.

I better damn well not get a higher bill. I have not touched my heater. It hasn't been on a single time.

Every unit in my 433-unit townhouse complex is all electric, and that was the big selling point, as I'm scared to death of gas. Don't know why this complex is all electric, as the big townhouse complexes up the street, all built around the same time, have gas and electric.

And even with being all electric, in 17 years, my electric bill has never been higher than $185, and that was summer time. And I have 1300SF of space, 2 stories.

Question is: if you have a house with gas and electric, can you just turn off the gas permanently, and go all-electric?

It is (currently) far cheaper to heat with gas than electric (even compared to an electric heat pump). Natural gas prices are amazingly dirt cheap and have been for years now.

To the OP, I have a 2000sf home and my gas bill runs $20-$25 year round until usually the December bill. My Jan bill is highest and runs around $125. That's me setting it at 68 during the day when I'm not home and usually 70 when I am home.

I have gas stove (not used too much), water heater, and clothes dryer too. Sounds normal to me!

We're right about the same as yours. I keep my thermostat at 69 degrees, and we have gas hot water, heat, stove, and dryer. We had guests for 2 weeks in December, so it went up to about $140. Normally runs $40-$50/mo.

My house also has two heaters, 2300 + sf, single story and my gas bill was 110.00 for December. Keep it at 70 during the day and turn down to 67 at night.

Ok I'll bite, why does a home in the Las Vegas area need 2 furnaces?

We get by with one up here in MN ...

Also why would you be "afraid of gas?"

Not judging just asking

It gets cold here, and many homes have 2 zones due to their size.

Why someone would be afraid of gas is unknown to me. But, then again, there are people who are afraid of pretty much anything you can think of.
