After you have an established payment record (probably a year or so) The gas company will allow you to go on a balanced billing plan. Mine is $27 per month. (NV Energy will let you do the same thing for electric)

It doesn't save money, but it makes budgeting much easier.

Never mind me! Living in MN, my mother woke me up one night, in a panic, apparently a burner on the stove had been left on, and the house smelled of gas, and I was ushered outside the house in the cold of winter because my mother thought the house was going to explode. I was very young then, and I've never forgotten it.

Yes, in my all-electric house there can be electrical fires, but, psychologically, if nothing else, I prefer not to have gas in my house!

Received my gas bill yesterday, it was only $62.14(70 therms). Last month's bill was $44.73(29 therms). I also have 2 furnaces for my townhouse but only run the one upstairs.

We have central air as well but of course not the heat you have .

Good to know

I assume that your heat comes from floor registers? Ours are from the ceilings because we rely more on A/C than heat. That may have something to do with it.

Our house has some really high ceilings, 28 feet in the living room, so it wastes some heat. Heat rises, cold air sinks. We don't really need two units for heat, especially on a second floor. Ours are mostly for A/C in summer. The last home we had didn't have a second floor A/C unit and it was always too hot. Never a problem for heat though.

AireServ just replaced both of our units yesterday with two 15 SEER units. One is 2 ton, the other 5 ton. I'll be anxious to see what we save on gas and electricity now. They are so quiet we don't know they are on. Builders don't give you the best on a new home, and the smaller one was so noisy it could wake you up at night. But they lasted 12 years without too many problems.

One of the best things you can do to save money on HVAC is to go to Home Depot and get a programmable, digital, thermostat. Easy to install. Insulation is a big factor too. Yesterday we were without heat all day and the temps hardly varied.

Our December gas bill for a 2500 sq. ft. home was about $150. Probably because I have a been running cold and I go around turning up the heat.

My gas bill has been very consistent for the last 3 yrs; $50-60/mon for Dec. and Jan. and $20-30/mon for rest of the year. Two people in a 2-story little over 2400 SF house with gas heater and stove, and thermostat set at 66-68 F.

This is our first Winter here. We have a 2100sf house. The bill we got in December was $60.19. The bill we got yesterday was $87.86. After living in Connecticut and having a big electric bill plus paying about $2500-3000 to have heating oil delivered from November to March, I have no complaints. :-)
