I'm 24 and just gotten laid off, I've lived in Vegas my whole life but finding work has been real slow. Im trying to get into an apprenticeship for construction. Doesn't matter which trade it is, just construction because i'm a good laborer and have been working with my hands for as long as i can remember. Any ideas how to start moving forward being that i have no connections in this "its who you know" kind of city

I think you answered your own question. You are very young, so why not relocate to an area where there is a DEMAND for your skill set ? You can always return to LV after paid your dues in an apprenticeship in another City. You have youth in your favor, go for it.

Probably should have mentioned that in the original post. I can assume that you have family here, who can help you raise the kids?

In which case, yes, you should stay here. My advice is to not be so selective. "Construction or nothing" limits your opportunities greatly. If you can get in ANYWHERE at a Strip resort, you can work hard, be cheerful, and transfer around until you're in a job that you like. The pay and benefits can be great, and often the work environment is better than most job-sites.

Have simultaneous applications going for Caesar's, Wynn, MGM and Sheldon's casinos. They pay the best and have the best benefits. I know with MGM, you can only have one application going at a time. You might be able to submit multiples for other properties.

Just apply for anything you know you can do well. Then just sign the bid sheets in the hallways and move up/sideways into the job that you want.

Yes I am willing to do any type of employment for the time being, but ive had experience in construction "under the table" when i was in H.S. im just wondering how to start making it legit and start an apprenticeship or have experience "on paper" to help me be an established construction worker of any trade

I just told you. You get in ANYWHERE at a casino, and then move yourself around to carpentry, electrician, welder, engineer, ironworker, anything.

And once you get in as the skilled tradesman (or apprentice tradesman), you're in the union and working your way up. There are many paths to the same mountaintop. Don't discount the resorts. That can be an easy, fun way to get to where you want to be.

So what if you have to mop floors for three months to get established? Just be the world's happiest floor mopper, and then sign bid sheets for the engineering jobs they post every few days.

First, you gotta quit staying up so late. A carpenter gets up at 4 am. I'm retired now, and sleep in until 5.

Go see these guys:
WACA of Southern Nevada

Or one of the sites listed here. Entry level positions are typically available, because the wage is so low. Beginners get weeded out fast if they're not mechanically inclined.

I agree about the staying up late part, but being im unemployed most of my physical job hunting is in the day and internet is during the night. I appreciate the information guys, I don't feel so in the dark now.
