Brad,

Please think very carefully about the "neighborhood" you move to, especially if you're from NY or NJ. There are no neighborhoods here as we know them there.

I made a HUGE mistake renting a house on N. Sloan Lane (on the east side, near Frenchman Mountain). Even though I much prefer to live in a freestanding house--and with a great pool and view of the mountains--I'm going to move to an apartment complex (Wellington Meadows--www.wellingtonmeadows.com) when my lease is up here on June 1. The Peccole Ranch--Summerlin--Boca Park area (west, on the way to Red Rock Canyon) is closer to the kind of living most NY-NJ folk know or are used to. The area in particular on Sahara that I'll be moving to is accessible on foot and has interesting sights and shops. Big library, and the LV art museum right outside the door.

The neighborhood I'm stuck in now is isolated in a crappy, depressing way (not in the romantic way, out in the middle of rural nowhere). There's no central meeting place, no corner store, unfriendly neighbors and great inconsistencies in the ethical, intellectual, cultural standards of said neighbors (a real lack of cohesion and sense of community) , VERY noisy, awful kids, neglected dogs that bark constantly, lots of graffiti, no signs of intelligent life. A bummer. WISH I HAD KNOWN BEFORE I MOVED!

Seriously, give Wellington Meadows a look. They have a huge, beautiful pool, heated year-round and open 24 hrs; gym and business center; porch or patio; covered assigned parking; club room; ret includes membership in Peccole Ranch, in which the complex sits, blah, etc. Drive all the west on Sahara, just past Ft. Apache and before Grand Canyon, on the west side of Sahara. The complex number is 9950. It's gated on well-kept, appealing grounds, and there's shopping right outside the gate. Red RocK Casino, Whole Foods Market & B&N nearby, if it matters to you. Lots of good shopping, at least half of it high end but plenty for midrange folks like me; and a very scenic, area, especially as you drive farther west on Sahara.

Whatever you decide: good luck! Hope it all works out smoothly and happily for you.

NO MORE SNOW!

Julia,
Great choice in your new home at Wellington Meadows. I lived in that area for 9 years before moving to Aliante. That's a great area, and you have so much you can walk to from there. There is a nice park with a good walking/biking trail off of Hulapai, heading north. Right after you go through the light at Charleston, make an immediate left onto the first street, (it's easy to miss at first) and the park is on your right, right past the senior center/homes.
Long stairs head down into the park. I used to walk the trails there and ride my bike.

Hey guys I just want to give a quick update and ask about one more apartment complex

First of all, I ran all around town when I was there last week and I have yet to commit anywhere. I viewed a few nice places and a lot of average(seemingly overpriced) apartments. It gets tiring searching for a place so I probably didn't see as many as I should have. Anyway, I found a nice place on N Buffalo just off the summerlin pkwy. Copper palms is the name I believe but I'm just not sure if I wan't to be that far north of the strip. Getting down I-15 in the morning from there has to be a disaster right?

I spent my time at Sedona on LVB S and I really enjoy that location. They have the callway golf center right up the road and also all kinds of food in the area and shopping just minutes away at the galleria mall. It also seems a little less hectic so I'm kind of leaning toward something down there. The parkside villas does seem like a decent enough place.

Now to one more apartment question, any info on the st clair apartments on fort apache? I know it's not southern vegas where I'm thinking but it's close enough. I mapquested it and it's only 10 miles or so on the 215 which should be very fast with the exception of rush hour maybe. I'm not even sure how I came across this place but I checked out their site and they're offering a lot more apartment for less $$. The reviews are positive so I'm not sure what the scoop is here. Why are the prices so cheap??

I appreciate all the help so far guys, this is a very tough decision for me to make and I don't want to make a bad choice. I'm the type of person who likes to weigh all the options before I jump on something.

Thanks for the thoughts Julia. I didn't get up as far north and east as you but we drove from eastern/pebble all the way up past fremont and through some of the side streets checking things out. I have to say I highly doubt I will ever live in that part of town , I was just not feeling it at all. There might be some nice places mixed in...I don't know enough about the area though. Hopefully you are at least safe where you are. Anyway good luck getting out of there and into your penthouse at wellington

Copper Palms is not an apartment but a condo conversion. A little more than 1/3 owner occupied which is better than most conversions. The area is quite nice for apartment/condo dwellers. I prefer Isla which is on Lake Mead a block or so off Buffalo. Adagio across the street from Copper Palms is the nicest but a slightly higher price point. The area is very nice. A Steiners for american food, Grape stree a little upper wine and food, Osaka...adequate Japanese and Bucca de Beppo for adequate Italian. There is also a great park down on Washington, the lakes in desert Shores and traiils through the Summerlin piece. Note one big advantage of Isla is that it is not on Buffalo.

It is more west of the strip than north...you go Summerlin Pkwy to 95 to I15. Less than 15 minutes non rush hours. In rush hour you go north on Buffalo and cut through on Sahara or DI or Trop. Under half an hour. Note that 215 has the same problem in the rush hour. The intersection with I15 clots up. Probably quicker overland from there as well during the rush hour.

I would think the run from St. Clair or Copper Palms would be similar in the rush hour. Quicker from Palms off hours.

Did you check the Wellington? The list has current reviews on it that were very positive. Area probably better than St Clair as a place to live.

Sure, send me your SS#, credit card number and security code. lol I'm kidding.
Check out the Wellington Meadows apts and some others close by. There are also a few other complexes close by to the WM. But WM has the best reviews in that area. And you can walk to a heck of alot without ever crossing Sahara or Ft. Apache.

Ok here is the deal with those two. Same area of town basically and:

Wellington Meadows-783sf 1 Bdrm=$890/month
889sf 1 Bdrm=$965

St clair= 1229 SF 2 Brdm for $915/month

I just don't understand why it's so cheap Check out the site stclairapts.com and look at the pictures for yourself. It looks like a fine place to me. Also the reviews on apartmentratings.com have the same 78% positive rating as wellington but no recent reviews which seems a little strange. Obviously a ton better deal at stclair but something can't be right.

Sorry Brad, those are two totally different area's. According to the website, St.Clair apts are at 5450 S.Ft Apache Rd, 89148 zip. Thats way south, not anywhere close to The Lakes. Wellington Meadows is technically in Peccole Ranch, which is right across the street from The Lakes, and just down the road from Summerlin.
St.Clair apts are in a good area too, so if that's the location you really want, go for it. I think you will be happy there. And you get more for your money. You may notice a few more airplanes (alot)overhead than the other location. But the other location is also subject to alot of helicopters flying back and forth, and they don't fly as high as they should. If you have soundproof windows, you probably won't hear either anyway. Go with what feels right to you, and definitely visit both locations and check out the neighborhoods. Don't just check during the day, check in the evenings, especially a friday or saturday evening/night. Good luck.
