My apartment let me out of my lease 6 months early. For $1,000 extra of course but it's cheaper than staying an extra 6 months and going broke....

if you signed the lease, you are liable whether you took possession or not

Verbally and e-mail do not count. Put it in a letter and hand deliver, having someone sign for it, or send it certified mail, return receipt requested. Nothing verbal or e-mail will hold up in court (printed out e-mails could have easily been altered and you cannot prove the person involved read it. but keep copies anyway for a little extra backup).

As airics said, if you signed the Lease and paid your deposit and rent, then you legally have a contract. However not moving in yet is definitely to your advantage. Now you need to formally (IN WRITING) be released from the Lease.

has to be in writing or it will never stick.

I am going to have to break my lease here in las vegas and am worried that they will try to change the locks or keep my belonging, even though i will be out during "paid" period. Can they do any of that?

Can they do that? Yes.

Should they do it? No.

Will they do that? Probably not.

I would think, and hope, the manager at the apartment complex would have a little compassion for your situation. Yes, legally they can enforce the lease agreement, but talking is always the best way to hopefully resolve something. Good luck.

of course they cannot take your stuff while you are paid... once you are gone they will serve notice, change the locks, try to find you, sue you, won't be able to find you, sell the paper to a collection agency, which in turn will ding your credit so that in 5yrs when you need a loan you won't be able to get a good one.. and you'll owe 500% more than what you owe now..
