No help yet, because you have not laid out how much you are willing to spend. Time of year is also important in that equation.
This is the right advice.

OP, go to an OTA (orbitz, Expedia, kayak, trip advisor, whatever you like), and do a preliminary search for the week you want to go and find some hotels that are in your budget class and post a short list here. We can help you with location and quality and amenities when we see what your affordable points of comparison are. Otherwise, people are just shooting in the dark with their advice.

I've stayed at the:

* Stratosphere (inexpensive nice looking rooms), buffet was so-so. Not opposed to staying there again, but not my 1st choice.
* Flamingo. Unless they've remodeled recently, keep looking. It wasn't worth what I paid.
* Silverton (off strip), well worth it! Bass Pro is attached, so PLENTY of shopping to be done. Food was good. My 1st choice.

I've not stayed at any other on-strip hotels, mostly because since I live here....why stay on the strip when I've got a perfectly good bed at home? But there is the cost as well. I can tell you the more expensive places will be Bellagio, MGM, Venetian/Palatzo & Ceasars.

My first bit of advice is that you need to consider the level of agreement and coordination everyone has...measure the difficulty you currently have in ll agreeing on stuff...multiply the difficulty by 100. That's what it'll be when in LV...I rarely see more than three of any group agreeing on the same thing here.

I agree that how much you ar willing to spend will give you a guide. Also consider how long you will really be in the room. I wouldn't spend a ton of money on a room because I wouldn't be in there longer than it takes to sleep, shower, and change clothes. If I am in a city like Las Vegas, I do not want to spend my time in a hotel room when there is so much to see and do outside of it. But that's me

The budget can't be low if they plan to stay in a room over New Years.

If these folks are infrequent visitors, they may not be aware of the high cost of rooms over New Year's Eve.

Las Vegas is one of the FEW hotel markets where a property will offer a $30 rate on one day and a $375 rate for the next two days.

My only NYE in Las Vegas occurred in the early 90's. We could not secure reservations at ANY casino-hotel, so we stayed at Motel 6, next to the Tropicana. They were the only ones who didn't jack their prices way up.
At about 8pm we drove down to Treasure Island, which was the "it" hotel at the time. After parking, we discovered that they were already over their fire limit with people, and we were turned away. We walked to the Mirage, and stood in line at a bar for more than an hour, and never got served. Finally, we left and went across the strip. Buffalo Bill's maybe. I offered $20 to a cocktail waitress for 3 beers off of her tray. They were the only drink 3 of us had before midnight. It was impossible to get on a table or at a slot machine. They were all taken, with lines behind them.
We left the next morning to go home. The Interstate was bumper to bumper with carloads of college-age kids who had driven from LA, partied all night, then headed back home with no sleep. It was pretty scary!
I decided once was enough, and haven't been back for NYE. Now, I get free offers from casinos, but go places like Cancun, for NYE instead.
BTW: I have really enjoyed Lake Tahoe for NYE, as they offer skiing as well as gambling. If you ski, it's something to consider. Meanwhile, I suggest going to LV at any other time of the year.
Best of luck to you!

This is so very true. We've been to Vegas many times with just one other couple, and little or no agreement as to which casinos to visit, how long to play in them once we got there, where to eat dinner, when to eat dinner, etc. etc. It usually turns out to be four people each doing their own thing. I think my favorite way to visit is just with Mr. Dokie. At least we can agree on the dinner stuff. But often we part ways after breakfast and don't meet back up until then.

One time I ran into some out of town folks. They wanted to call a cab at Red Rock Casino, to take them to the strip. The shuttle was not running when they wanted to go...I told them to walk to the street, Charleston, and take a city bus to the strip.

The look on their face was absolutely priceless! They never considered taking a city bus at all.

The public transportation system in Las Vegas is easy to use and fairly cheap. Not always fast...but you meet some really interesting folks on the bus.

We used to take the Deuce Bus to Fremont St., or the outlet mall downtown, but after timing it a couple of times, we quit. Two hours each way to the mall. One to Fremont Street. Lots of fun, but...
