Default Casino Employee

Good luck with your move to California - I understand that second hand smoke can affect those who are non-smokers.

I work in a casino and I can tell you it is difficult - some people may say, well, just switch jobs, although we all know that it not very easy in this economy.

It's a Las Vegas issue as it relates to the casinos. Yes, one could make a similar thread in other forums, but it's not inappropriate for this forum. If the thread doesn't interest you, just move on to another one.

I was surprised that many tables did not have blowers on them to protect the dealers. As a smoker (and a former dealer), with proper ventilation I haven't found inside smoking at casinos to be that big of a deal. The only time it really was bad for me was when I was dealing blackjack and there was a bachelor party of 6 gentlemen smoking cigars at the same time. That got a little rough. But I noticed that in the larger casinos on the strip, the ventilation was great. Only in Bill's could I really notice the amount of smoke in the air. If you look around, you can find the places with the best ventilation if that's a concern.

What if you're not into gambling at all and don't go to casinos, is the 2nd hand smoke an issue then? See, I've been contemplating a move to Phoenix in about a year from now. LV doesn't have the same ban on smoking that Phoenix does, but it may not make any difference for me anyway. "Maybe I'll want to go see some live music at a bar, or maybe I'll want to go a strip club and see hot women". But come on, I quit drinking years ago and haven't been to either type of establishment in forever. What's the likelihood I'm going to start going to those places now! I'm into the simple life now. My parents are getting old and I want to live with them in a nice house and do some outdoor grilling without humidity and mosquitoes.

I was just clicking around Las Vegas on google maps, it's beautiful there. Better weather than Phoenix; higher elevation, a little cooler, a little drier. And it's a closer drive to LA (I love LA too).

Question is whether I can score an accounting job there once I finish college, but that's a topic for another thread.

You'll be hearing more from me in this forum. I'm excited to start researching another great desert city.

I quit smoking years ago and I now understand that the smoke can be irritable to some people. It bothers my wife a lot, but does not bother me much at all, except for cigars - never could stand 'em. I never realized how much I smelled of tobacco until after I quit. But I have always been skeptical of the second hand smoke thing. The second hand smoke warriors might want to take a look at the following site, and others if you google the subject. It would appear that most, if not all, of the second hand smoke studies were seriously flawed.

Here's a funny story about the hypocrisies of most state governments and smoking laws. When NY went smoke free the american cancer society and NYS used "fighting for the employees" as the foundation for their argument. Patrons had the ability to make a choice on where they decided to eat and drink, sometimes an employee was stuck in the job and couldnt leave so they said they were fighting for the employees. The state goes smoke free, many small bars went out of business as people decided to stay home and have a few beers. There is a large Indian casino here that does not have to follow state law. Place is packed and full of smoke...Guess where the american cancer society held their largest yearly fund raiser (until people protested and they moved it) Jim Boeheim and syracuse university hold a million dollar coaches vs cancer fund raiser every winter...guess where? guess where different branches of the state gov't hold several conventions every year?...not in the smoke free restaurants that they crammed down out throats thats for sure.

I think its a capitalist society and if people wanted to support smoke free bars and casinos they would flourish...and like all of you said above, the ones that open dont stay in business. Hopefully that will change someday but until the people make the choice for themselves the gov should keep out of it.

Back when I smoked, I went to a concert at the Sunset Station. The concert was outdoors. During intermission, I wanted a cigarette, but I was informed that the outside was a non smoking area. I was directed to go into the casino if I wanted to smoke.

I remember after the smoking ban in Massachusetts, one bar in Northampton refused to go smoke-free. Back then it was just a fine to the owners (now I believe it has liquor license implications). But the owners found that it was worth far more than the fine to remain a smoking bar. It gave smokers a place to go and they were one of the most successful bars in town. I agree that everyone should have a choice. I personally am a smoker but prefer to smoke outside. Even now in the middle of winter in New England I go out on my deck to smoke. It will be nice to not freeze my tochas off when we get to LV and I can smoke in my back yard.

that tv commercial is right.second hand smoke is a first rate killer.

I do not agree with any commercial about smoking OR second hand smoke.. If you take into account their statistics and numbers you will find that the population of the earth would be roughly 1/2 to 2/3's of what it is today..... According the these so called experts.... More people die from second hand smoke than all of the people killed in any war from the beginning of time thru the present....

And as fr moving to Californias.. Hell just breathing the air here will kill you more than any cigarette smoke....
