We get a lot of folks with "stars in their eyes" on the Los Angeles forum.

When they move here and learn that this is just a normal city - warts and all - they tend to get angry.

Oh well - we warned them.

Shoot - having the beach and mountains close by is nice - as is the natural wilderness near Las Vegas - but in the end, if you can't deal with daily humdrum life, and big city grittiness - you probally aren't going to extend your "honeymoon" in Los Angeles, or maybe Las Vegas for very long(I speak in the non-positive sense about Las Vegas only because I have not lived there - I am sure that the locals will either affirm or reject my analysis).

Los Angeles is about community above all things, anyway - we are defined by our neighborhoods.

Perhaps the same is true about Las Vegas - and I would encourage anyone who doesn't have substantial reasons for moving anywhere to think long and hard about what and why they are planning to do - and to seek out locals who can tell you the reality of a possibly life changing decision.

Meh, Laguna Beach is too surrounded by civilization.

It's a nice pocket - but it is still part of a big metropolis, and can't quite shake its proximity to negative things.

The beaches are beautiful, however.

Because some things transcend "excuses" - especially when they can't be readily found elsewhere.

True enough - this guy, though I disagree with him politically(he is a liberal), wrote a good book about southern California - and got it pretty much right.

Ecology of Fear: Los Angeles and the Imagination of Disaster: Mike Davis: 9780375706073: Amazon.com: Books

He wrote another book about Los Angeles called "City of Quartz" -

City of Quartz: Excavating the Future in Los Angeles (New Edition): Mike Davis, Robert Morrow: 9781844675685: Amazon.com: Books

He is one of the few liberals whom I think make at least some sense - and he does make some compelling, and entertaining arguments.

People who live in "the OC" and those in other areas of southern California(like me), hate that term.

Call it OC if you want, or Orange County - but "the OC" grates on our nerves.

Come to the politics forum - and learn how deleting or altered posts becomes an art form.

I come to the Las Vegas, LA, or Seattle forums for a break - sheesh!

I don't think I moved for the wrong reasons, I moved because I wanted to for the experience. I loved it while I was there and do still visit, the love is not lost. Just realized while I was there that it was far from my family and I was not able to readily get to them when needed. So it was a great experience and I enjoyed my time out there.

I hear what's being said about coming to Vegas as a tourist, not seeing much past the strip, then deciding to move there.

Every time I go out there, and it's at least a half a dozen times now, I rent a car and get off the strip (why hang out in casinos in the middle of the day?). I like what I see when I get off the strip. That's one of the reasons I want to move out there.

Unfortunately, people cannot do the things that they'll be experiencing in the valley -- standing in line at the DMV, a doctor's visit, buying groceries, and the normal mundane stuff of life. Like waiting at a crosswalk for seems like eternity when a school lets out, as the inconsiderate little bastards pimp-shuffle across the street as if it's a "who can walk the slowest" contest.

Getting off the strip doesn't really matter if you're just driving to Red Rock or similar sightseeing.
