A friend of mine just moved to Las Vegas from Manhattan. She worked in NYC as an office manager for an AV company. She would like to work for one of the casino's in Vegas but it is more difficult than originally anticipated. It seems like if you have never worked in a casino or the hospitality industry they have no interest. Can anybody help with advice. Thank you.

+1

Get your foot in the door and then work that job like it's the best thing that's ever happened to you. If you have a brain and a great attitude, you'll go far. The great attitude is the most important thing.

Everyone wants to start out with their "dream job at the casino" -- whatever it happens to be. That isn't how it works. You get in. You work hard. You move up.

it does appear that most people who post on these boards will need to work their way up--likely from the bottom-- in the hospitality industry to get what they want...not too much lateral movement.

the good thing, according to CD insiders, is that it does not take very long.

99% of the Las Vegas newcomers should be asking "How do I get my foot in the door on the strip?". Thats about it. Asking for anything else(CEO type, management level, senior director) would be like me asking how to start out at the top on Wall Street, North Dakota oil job industry, military, real estate agent...etc. Gotta start from the bottom.

of those CEO types, management level, senior directors, I wonder how many of them started out at the bottom...just curious.

the military is different...no shortcuts there...gotta put the time in.

it's normally better to start off--or at least spend time at--the bottom anyway. a really bad feeling is to be put in charge of something and not know what to do and have those below and above know it.

being the boss can be overrated-- especially if you are held accountable for failures.

my two baht.

Well, you can go to West Point get get straight into middle management in the military. Or go to Harvard business school and do the same at a casino. I went to culinary school and avoided starting as a dishwasher. But I have coworkers who started as dishwashers. That's "the bottom" in the culinary world. And there are executive chefs who started there. Ambition, skill and attitude will put you where you want to be.

Casinos, in my experience, never hire people directly into the plum positions. Those positions must be earned. It is a fairly good system, all things considered.

You comment about the military is not true. They have a two tier recruiting structure, one for enlisted men, another for officers. Most companies have the same procedure. They hire bulk workers for bottom end jobs, and college graduates the get funnelled into management positions.
