He was too busy with other problems with the Feds, so HH offered him a deal he couldn't refuse. The legend says that the DI wanted Hughes to give up the penthouse so they could rent it to high rollers. Hughes didn't want to leave so he bought the place. But, that is probably just legend. At a media group lunch I went to a couple of weeks ago, Hughes former pilot, and Hughes Tool Co executive, gave a talk. He said most of those stories are BS. Hughes was not confined to a dark room all drugged up. He would go out and conduct business, and even fly airplanes as far away as Europe. He was looking for a place for a new airport here in southern Nevada, so he had his pilot out in the middle of the night doing touch and goes on dry lakes, with Hughes in the co-pilot seat. Then Hughes would take the controls and fly home.

He also said that the lawyers never called on him to testify in the Melvin Dumar case, but he knows that the story is true, and the guy did pick Hughes up from out of a ditch on U.S. 95 a few miles south of the ho'house in Beatty. He knows it was true because he had flown Hughes up there that night, and while he was sleeping in the kitchen, Hughes was robbed and dumped in the ditch along the highway. They told him Hughes had left earlier, so he had to fly the plane back to Las Vegas. He later found out that the guy dropped Hughes off at the house on the DI Golf Course that Ch-8 now owns. Hughes trusted secretary was living there so that's where he wanted to go so he could arrange to sneak back into the DI without being seen. Melvin could never had made that up, because nobody, especially a miner from Gabbs, NV, knew about the place, or would have known the secretary.

Same thing in NYC life was better for everyone when the mob ran it. Mayor Giulliani ruined NYC .

Las vegas was a great place to work if you were in the adult industry when the mob ran it.

Looks to me that the Cops can't catch the real criminals these days so their daily arrests are mostly prostitutes on the streets and in hotels.

So Dyn, you miss the mob, yet you refuse to give that nice pending felony lady a job. You can't have it both ways, buddy. Either you WANT more felons in your town or you don't. Make up your mind, will ya?
