I agree. That's pretty much what I learned when I checked it out. You pay a lot for their brand of convenience.

Look into actually purchasing an enclosed cargo trailer. I did this on my last move. Then when I got situated, I re-sold it for a little profit. Cost me nothing to move.

Default we used pods...

... and were completely happy. Some things to consider: with a rental truck you still have to unload it yourself, plus a pods is ground level and a truck will most likely have a narrow ramp slanting down from the truck bed. Not to mention you have to drive the dam thing cross country, plan your route carefully, spend god knows what on gas, accommodations, and meals etc etc. We paid roughly half what you quoted above to get our things from cali and it was worth it to us. we also purchased our own refrigerator dolly to load up and then sold it when we got here.

One other hint: rent one or two dumpsters and don't be shy about what is important to move. We made our move much more painless by throwing away 17 years of useless crap.

happy trails

I've used these services in the past. I didn't use PODS, but a local company that was similar for much less. That was five years ago. Now with our move from Minnesota to Las Vegas, the local company won't work (they are just within a certain radius of their facility), so we decided to go with ABF Moving (http://www.upack.com). You can either go with their standard trailer or they also have Relo-Cubes, which is what we decided to use as the driveways and areas in front of the Las Vegas homes is so tiny, we figure this will work better and the cubes will fit in our driveway. They are more like Pods, but smaller so you use more of them. It's less than half the cost of what our full service move quote was. You pay for the cubes, not the weight, as in a full service move.

Ours are getting delivered tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

Check them out. Maybe they'll work for you.

Arrow agreed

I agree. They charge a bloody fortune. Ship books via media mail. Much cheaper.

We used Allied and it was a great experience. We boxed it up and they loaded and unloaded the truck into the rooms we wanted. It cost a small fortune, but it made the move less stressful and we didn't have to break our backs doing heavy lifting.

You should look in the General Moving Section here aat City Data.

When you get there..check out my thread on ABF Moving Company.
They've been around for more than 60 years, and offer the same exact moving system as PODS for HALF of what PODS charges.
Also....Google "PODS complaints" and read all the horror stories.
Good luck.
Just used ABF this past week with our move from MN to Henderson. Another happy ABF customer.

I used ABF when we moved here from Michigan a few years ago. I think we paid around $1500 for one "pod". It worked out great.
