Compared to other popular cities such as Chicago, NYC, LA, etc...

I always see Las Vegas listed up there as one of the cheaper places in the country to live along with Detroit, Santa Fe and a few others....and even a quick real estate search shows you can get a legitimate house not too far from the strip for around $100,000.

My question is how cheap, though? I'm looking for an apartment around perhaps $300 or less. Can I get a place to live in Las Vegas that cheap or does a low rate like that only fly in Detroit?

Also, I can tolerate bad or ethnic neighboorhoods to some extent if the price is right. In the neighboorhood I'm in right now in Chicago, robberies are common place....even though I've never been robbed I keep a loaded gun nearby and I have a rottweiler that watches over the place when I'm not around. A 'bad' neighborhood, or just an ethnic neighborhood I could tolerate, but I couldn't tolerate a bunch of homies hanging out banging and selling crack in the same apartment complex as is very common with some of the more notorious neighboorhoods around Chicago. I understand the gang problem in LV isn't as bad as LA, but is this phenomenon still present in locations where you'll find cheap apartments?

Also, in Chicago it's hard to find an apartment under $500 let alone one that isn't crime infested. Like I said I could settle with more crime and degradation if I can indeed find apartments in the $200-$300 price range.

You've got to be kidding, right? No apts for $300 or under. You can rent a room for that, but not an apt.

The places that would rent for $300 a month here would have you pining for the gun-infested areas of Chicago in no time. Seriously, don't even consider it. You would regret it almost immediately.

Raise your price point if that's within your means and you'll be significantly happier. The old "you get what you pay for" phrase definitely applies to this situation.

Here's an example of some of the cheaper apartments I've come across.

Siegel Suites Tropicana, Las Vegas - Trulia

$299-$399/mo

I've never been in a Siegel Suites, but I've driven past some of them in town. I'd say it's a real stretch to call those apartments. They appear to be little more than glorified motels.

Lulz, I'm 20 yrs old. Every month of my life was characterized by my parents struggling to pay the bills. Give me my own hole in the wall with electricity and not too many cockroaches for $300 a month out there and I'll instantly feel like a Vegas high roller.

There's a stigma for cities like Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami etc... specifically amongst people in the mid-west and the east-coast. No matter how bad the reality might be in these places, if someone from the neighborhood hears so and so moved to Las Vegas, the first assumption made right there is this person must be having sex with escorts, gambling, and drinking every night of his life.

I also passed by that place every day while house hunting in Vegas. Did I see a sign claiming they also feed you for free or was that a mirage?
Because I've been wondering from this day just what exactly it is they feed you.

Call and ask "is your buffet better than Circus Buffet?" and see what they say!
