I am currently living in South Carolina, and going through a seperation, (preparing for divorce) and I am getting ready to move to Kansas City. I grew up near Manhattan, so I know Kansas, but KC is a different ball game. So, I have a couple of questions for anyone that has lived there for a while.

-What is the job market like right now?

-What kind of "young single life" is there?

It is going to be tough starting all over again after being married into the military and having moved a lot, but I am really looking forward to it, and have a good outlook. Let me know if you have any input. Thanks so much.

Jessica

As someone who's recently started trolling for new jobs, I can say the job market looks pretty decent.

It would HIGHLY DEPEND on your career field or skill set. Network, Network, NETWORK!
My career field is GIS, Info Tech, and Planning. Expect to find very stiff competition in those areas in KC due to a huge supply of people with similar skills. They just announced a new call center in Overland Park, though. I am sure that would have a lot of entry level jobs at modest hourly wages.

I think the job market probably depends on your sector, although we were not hit as bad with the recession as other communities. I know the tech industry is still doing okay with Cerner massively expanding and Garmin is always hiring and even Sprint seems to still be hiring despite occasional layoffs. Hospitals always seem to be hiring. We have a bunch of biomed research facilities that seem to still be doing well.

The single scene here has always been a bit less vibrant as other communities. People here tend to get married younger than in other cities, leaving a smaller pool of single people. But there is still a healthy population of single people since it is a large city. You'll find many hang out near the Plaza, or in Brookside, or Westport or downtown at the Power and Light District. I'd recommend living near those areas to be close to the action.

Best of luck!
