Lived in KC 13 yrs. Raytown IS a dump! so is South KC, and Wyandotte Co, KS. Stay in Johnson County, or Liberty, Lees Summit, or farther. If you have to be closer to the city, then just be aware how 1 street away can make huge difference in demographics, property values, and crime.

^^ One of the first things I learned after moving to KC is that you hear a lot of crap like this, and your filter for idiocy (not to mention your default eyeroll) gets pretty well-practiced. It doesn't matter what part of the metro you live in (Plaza, Waldo, Lee's Summit so far, here), folks spewing forth their "XYZ part of the metro is CRAAAAAAAAP" drivel are never far away. I advise anybody relocating around the metro to visit around and get their own feel for particular areas, and take the garbage like the above with the proverbial grain of salt.

I will agree that neighborhoods can vary from street to street, block to block, even, just like in every other urban area in which I've lived. But that's true of EVERYWHERE in the metro (even in Johnson County, the horrors!!!).

I'm currently looking for a home to buy. I grew up around I-435 and Nall in Overland Park, KS, and now live in Lee's Summit. I'm impressed with the Raytown neighborhoods, especially due to price. I feel like I've stumbled across a best kept secret. My realtor describes Raytown as a less desirable area, but I'm not completely sure why. The neighborhoods I've looked at seem to have a mild number of foreclosures and many owner-occupied homes. The schools seem decent (much better than KCMO but not as good as Lee's Summit or Shawnee Mission).
