EDIT: Was Noland known as No. 71 Bypass then?
Noland was US 71 By Pass clear through town. I think 71 bypass might have went east at US 24 Highway and then went to the present intersection of M-291 and US 24 and turned north and went through Liberty.

At some point US 71 By Pass was moved east in Independence and followed the present course of M-291 from US 40 when Jackson County Zero highway was built.

The address of the drive in is shown as Independence in the ad. It had an Independence address for years until Kansas City annexed it. I guess Independence did not want the area south of Highway 40 when they annexed to Highway 40.

The price for admission is 35 cents per person. Does not say anything about kids.

I have seen a number of Abbott and Cosetello movies but I do not remember "Ride 'em cowboy." Apparently it has not been on cable reruns.

Next door east from the drive in at the corner of US 71 Bypass and Highway 40 was the Hawthorne Cafe and a truck weighing station.

Originally the screen on that theater was contained on one side of a tall cement building. The building depth was just enough to allow a doorway and stair access up behind the screen. The building was just wide enough and tall enough to accommodate the screen of that era.

When CinemaScope hit around 1953 or so, they constructed a new steel supported wide screen immediately in front of the old screen.

Sometime after 2000 I came into town via I-435. I usually turn off at I-70 and head for Noland. But this time I went to Truman and then turned east specifically to see the castle. I had not been by there for many years.

I could not find it and thought I was losing it.

Local inquiries indicated that no one knew anything about any castle.

Then after I got back to Colorado, I found out it somehow burned enough in the 80s, I think, that it had to be torn down.
Must have cost some bucks for tear down and dump somewhere.

For the complete evolution of 71 By-pass, and all other highways in Missouri, go to this site which has Mo Highway maps back to 1918.

Indeed, the 1942 map (blown up) shows "71 Bypass" beginning west of Unity and running almost due north with (in red) "Noland Road" labeled vertically, to US 24.
