Dispatchers had large (2x3 ft.) laminated maps of the city, with the patrol districts outlined. In the 70s there was quite a bit of new subdivision construction. I would often drive out the new subdivisions and hand draw additions to our dispatch maps.

Anytime an officer was dispatched to one of the city's quirkier locations they weren't familiar with they would ask over the air for directions, usually a dispatcher or other officers would know the way.

Were there many "wrong address" appearances? It seems to me there would be, and I wonder if today's cops don't go thru "location training" of some sort. Even with GPS it helps to know the shape of the jurisdiction, best ways/wrong ways, etc. I still like to supplement my knowledge and "vision" of where I'm headed with a Rand-McNally or equivalent.

I doubt that there are any geography classes in the academy, as it is a regional facility. The police cars today have computers, but I don't know if they are interfaced with GPS. Most patrol officers work the same district everyday, so they get to know the area rather well.

In my day the majority of "wrong address" appearances were due to bad info from the caller. Sometimes they would forget to add minor details such as "Terrace" "Court" or direction. This was way waaay before caller-ID, 9-1-1, etc. We even received several calls a night from KC residents. It is amazing how many people don't know where they are!

It is the former Dickinson Lakes, as viewed in 1957.

Dickinson Lakes was the "tails" answer. The small ponds to the east on the south were the giveaway.

Given all the time you spent in that 'hood I figured you'd get it.

It is time for tough trivia!

If you were to take all of the addresses on public streets in Independence and place them in alpha-numeric order, first by number and then by street name, what address would be the very first listed?

Are you saying that there is an address or addresses in Independence that begin with less than 100?

Or, are you looking for the name of an Independence street as being the first in an alphabetical list?

An example of how you would organize the addresses to conform to my query:

100 Apple
100 Army
100 Asterick

(not real answers, of course!)
