Hey, can WCHS or MAD (or anyone) take this photo and lighten it up? As some of you know, that's my "part-time hood" as a kid and I'd love to be able to see more detail. Also the youngsters here might want to see what the south side of Maple looked like back then before the houses were leveled
For now the quickest way to see this 'hood from the past is to go to

Jackson County Aerial Photographs, 1963 :: Aerial Photograph Collection

Select photo DLL-2DD-062, zoom in and follow the roads to that area.

Rock Creek Schools was it's own independent district until sometime in the mid-1960s when it was annexed by Kansas City Public Schools. There were five "Rock Creek" schools:

North Rock Creek (the original) was located at 2425 S Hardy. It is still standing, but is now a private school called Nova for kids who need more one-on-one work. PIC: Rock Creek School | KC HISTORY

South Rock Creek is located at 2437 S Hardy, but is now North Rock Creek/Korte. It now is part of Independence Public Schools. PIC: South Rock Creek School | KC HISTORY

West Rock Creek was at 8820 E 27th. It was shut down in 2010 and is now abandoned. PIC: West Rock Creek School | KC HISTORY

East Rock Creek is at 11801 E 32nd. It was annexed by Independence Public Schools and is now Three Trails School. PIC: East Rock Creek School | KC HISTORY

There is another Rock Creek standing somewhere in the area of North and South RC, but has been long since abandoned. PIC: Rock Creek School | KC HISTORY

I know I'm a little late- I hope you'll forgive me

Late is fine, we move at a slower pace here! The last one listed is still standing, it is a view of the north end of North Rock Creek School as viewed from Westport Road. Use Google Street View and compare.

It appears you're correct! I always come up to the NEW North Rock Creek through Hardy, so I'm rarely on Westport. I've heard that there is a "haunted" tunnel beween both RC's, hopefully I'll find something about that. If there's anything I love, it's a good ghost story!

A tunnel, haunted or otherwise, is news to me. If you find it we want photos!

So why are there TWO Rock Creeks only 0012 apart on S Hardy? Was one an elementary and the other a jr. high? Seems odd that one would be named North and the other South when only that far apart

I guess I should know this since we were members of Rockwood CC for many years (duhhhh). It seems to me that if one stood by the pool or clubhouse and looked to the left that was a school that sat on a hill, I guess that would be east/southeast As I look at Maps it looks like a school is immediately east.

If it was that close, then I sure don't remember that. After a second look, Im thinking it might have been Nowlin Jr, which I know was there as I had baseball buddies who lived in that 25 Terr to 28 Terr neighborhood.

Damn I hate getting old.

I believe that one (north?) Rock Creek was k-3, while the other (south RC?) was 4-6 or 4-7. Nowlin junior high is immediately to the south of Korte, which may have been graded 8 and 9.

I’m a volunteer up at Korte, as well as a history geek, so I’m all over this stuff. I’m pretty good buddies with the custodian. The tunnel is supposed to be in the custodians office, so I’ll see what I can do as for pictures of that. I’ll be sure to keep you guys updated.
