They're not running their scam right. A criminal record check is 35. here, and up.
Yeah, that's usually what the work at home jobs charge: $35-50 for a background check.
Maybe they are just trying to weed out the applicants that have criminal records but apply anyway, hoping they will pass. I have known people with convictions, but they have passed background checks for jobs, somehow. However, maybe they wouldn't try for $10? I dunno. $10 is still not that big of risk if you really need a job.

Old news? Never heard that. I am employed but I always go on Craigslist and other job sites to see what's out there and possibly get a part-time job, that's how I saw it just yesterday. I thought it must be a pretty recent thing since I have never seen it when I am browsing.

The employers I mentioned were asking all applicants to bring in the $10.00 so imagine, if in one day, an employer gets 250 applications, that's $2,500.00 in the employer's pocket! These applicants may or may not even get the job so as far as I am concerned, it is scam. In other words, they give job applicants false hope so in the hope of getting a job, applicants just have to part with the $10.00.
Since when I have never seen this and I have been applying since last June. I guess this is lower end jobs?
It's incredibly common in Los Angeles and that may be where OP is posting from.
I've seen companies charge $60+ for office jobs, cleaning jobs, security jobs, and casino jobs. In regards to the security and casino jobs, you do need a badge to do the work legally, but that should come out the paycheck over the course of a few months.
I had two different jobs that told me I owed them money after I worked with them for a few days. I obviously never paid them. Restaurants and construction companies are especially well-known for bailing on pay as well. At least the ones in the OP are obviously scams. It's those ones where you are doing legitimate work that can eff you over big time.

I see your point. So if they get a job give them their "deposit" back. My first sales job I was the sales rep for the staffing office and temps get max 70% of the billable rate so I think that overhead is factored in.

Based upon that notion, everyone should be in prison since some people are criminals. I'm sure the companies refund the expense when the background checks are clear - hahaha... right
This is a scam, nothing more. Just another way to exploit the Great Recession for a quick, crooked profit at the expense of people who are out of work. But since corporations are doing it, it must be okay!
