The city is giving trees away this Saturday. I'm in a development and our lawn service said that live oaks aren't a good choice. I love them! Do you think it's because he doesn't want to deal with falling leaves? He also was against magnolias, but I had one in Tally and loved it, as well. The smell of their blooms- ahh!

What trees are good to plant in full sun here in Jax?

live oaks and magnolias are wonderful shade trees and do not grow much further south or north of here, so take advantage of the rare opportunity. love palm trees as well...like feeling like i really do live in fl

also, been to too many suburban "developments" lacking trees, start a precedent and grow some beatiful shade trees, adn i emphasize shade, also as a kid i used to climb magnolias because they were really easy to climb and fairly large, if u have kids and can somehow get a fully grown magnolia, then they will have a lot of fun if they are young

Thanks for the input. We have a "natural" area the has trees and those vines that they swing on. Lots of oaks around here. Some of the people complain because they can't grow grass under them. Hmmmm...let's ponder that- NO SUN, NO GRASS..... doesn't seem too hard to grasp!

In south FLorida I had palms around our pool. And there were parrots flying loose- nothing like floating in a pool, palms trees swaying and about a dozen of these parrots come flying overhead.

But in this part of Florida I want something more leafy.

agreeable, sometimes i think city leaders want that south florida look here too much when they plant palm trees along all the highways adn downtown streetscapes, etc. and the developers in their developments, but clearly since we cant grow royal palms up here (which stinks bc they are awesome!), then we are not south florida and should remember that we can also plant actual shade trees and the such, where are u currently living by the way?
