I really wanted to move to Central or South Florida for the "feel" of it. But the opportunity is in Jax. So Jax it is. Need a decent commute 30 minutes give or take, to downtown Jax from whereever we live. I'd like a community with some palm trees, a community pool for the kids to gather and A rated schools. Am I dreaming or asking for too much? Can I find this? If St. Johns is a must due to the schools, need a community close to Duvall border. Any suggestions? I looked at a community called Palermo in Jax near St. Johns Town Center- is that considered "southside"? Good schools there? Any thoughts about Jacksonville Country Day School? I'd like to go public & save $$$ for college if possible. I also heard from St. Johns County that they are STRICTLY enforcing the rule of 15:1 for grammer school and 17:1 for middle school--- anyone with kids in St. Johns County know if this is really being enforced? ANY help, any advice would be sooooo grately appreciated!

Our kids attend PVPV Rawlings Elem. School and we are very happy. This school is in St. Johns County and they have 18:1 for k-2, which is still good ratio.

St. Johns County is definitely better for schools. I don't know about the requirements though. St. Johns Towncenter is considered southside. There are alot of nice neighborhoods on that part of town, but the schools aren't great, unless you do private. I'm not sure about JCDS, I know most of the christian private schools have good ratings. Mandarin(zip 32256/32257/32258) has better public schools. Within Duval county, that is the only area of Jax I would consider sending my kids to public school. Ponte Vedra is a nice area, you're definitely going to get more palm trees there. PVB and CR210 is probably the closest you're going to get to the duval border, and they are close enough to interstates that the commute wouldn't be bad. Hope this was a little helpful, Good Luck with the move!

You didn't mention what you're looking for in a house specifically, but considering what you mentioned, I would look into Ponte Vedra (Nocatee) and Ponte Vedra Beach. LOTS of palm trees , the best schools in the area, and not a bad commute to downtown. Most communities have pools, but a lot have CDDs to pay for them.

Not sure it would be a 30 minute commute with traffic though (depending on where in downtown). Although that's exactly what you're looking for.

I live off Hodges between Beach and Atlantic. It is Duvall county but I have no complaints about the school here. I've got 3 palm trees in my front yard. And I'm 10 minutes from the beach.

But there are a LOT of areas like what you're asking for. Check them all out. Just make sure you take traffic into consideration for your commute. Traffic isn't what I'd call bad (I'm from NJ) but it'll slow you down. The traffic down JTB (or other roads to the beach area--where Ponte Vedra is) can get slow with volume. Doesn't usually STOP like I'm used to unless there's an accident. Without traffic it's a 15-20 minute drive to downtown from that area.

Nocatee. It has St Johns county schools (best in the state) and is literally on the Duval County boarder. One drive down Nocatee Parkway and you will see more palm trees in ten minutes than you would otherwise in a month. Best water park this side of Adventure Landing.

Nocatee is a nice area, and it is off of US1 (which I think is preferable to living off of I-95), and just barely south of Duval County. In fact, the northwestern portion of Nocatee is in Duval, but the majority of the residential land is in St. Johns (and I do not think they are building in the Duval county area yet). However, it is a CDD community. If you are not familiar with CDD fees, do some research. There are a few CDD communities down here, and people have different opinions about them.

Here's update info about Jacksonville/Duval County schools:

https://www.city-data.com/forum/jacks...y-schools.html

and the Magnet program: Duval County Public Schools Magnet Programs

As you can see, there are many good ones.

There are community pools all over the place, thanks YMCA's, among other orgs. And it's hard to find an area without palm trees.

Riverside & Avondale historic district, just Southwest of downtown Jax, was recently named a Top 10 neighborhood in America:

Great Places in America: Neighborhoods

Residents already know how great Jacksonville's Riverside-Avondale area is | jacksonville.com

and has an "old Floirda" feel to it, with a mix of palms huge mature live oaks, etc.

www.riverside-avondale.com for more info.

It has good schools overall (which you can find at the link at the top of the post) and a neighborhood YMCA (community pool): Yates Family YMCA | YMCA of Florida's First Coast

These 2 realty companies are very familar with the area:
