I currently have a cable/internet bundle with Time Warner Cable and even with me downgrading my internet and cable service, the monthly bill is still $90 after taxes. I am a full time student at a local college here in Dallas, and I don't make or have a lot of money.

I can live without the cable (I have several seasons of my favorite shows that I have bought over the past 10 years). However, I need the internet, especially for school.

I have heard of Vonage and heard that their prices are good for home internet, but I don't want or need a home telephone.

What company out there has decent (I don't need the fastest speeds to be able to do school work; i.e. roadrunner) internet service for a good price? Again, I am not conerned about having cable, just the internet. Any suggestions or advice is very much appreciated.

A friend of mine has U-verse and she says it is good. I think there are different levels of service, some more expensive than others.

Even though I'm in NC, I also have TWC. When you call to cancel, ask for retention department. They should give you a better deal for both. Just say you can't afford it. I was paying $130 for Internet and cable when I first started service. I called to cancel and now I've been paying $50 a month for both. It doesn't hurt to try to get it lowered.

Vonage is VOIP, they don't provide internet.

Do you have access to FiOS? uVerse? Who is your cell provider? Sometimes you can bundle that and get better prices.

You can check DSLReports Home : Broadband ISP Reviews News Tools and Forums to see who can service your place. Just click the "find service" link at the top.

What the Singlelady10 above says, DO IT! ! ! I have/had TWC in central Texas. Had the phone, the cable, and the net, all for whatever they wanted me to pay. Realized I didn't need the phone so canceled it. Then decided I wanted DirecTV, so canceled the cable feed. Left me with RoadRunner internet. Finally decided I didn't need the full 10 meg download with burst (the burst is only for the first 10 meg of a file download, then normal speed). So called to drop the download to 3 meg... whoops. Here's there problem with that... They need the 10 meg customer to keep up their numbers. The guy just promptly offered me 10 megs for the (3 meg) $30 a month for a year. So when the year expires I'll just insist on the 3 meg. And streaming works just fine with 3 megs.

So, get retention. If you don't actually have a reason to leave TWC then don't. If there's problems then they're likely more local than national.
