I assume it's the age-old adage: "don't be an idiot and you'll be relatively fine"?

but seriously: Is downtown always a ghost town after 6pm-ish? it seems like the streets are completely empty in the evening. how crime-ridden can a place be if there aren't even criminals out walking the streets?

Put it like this....visit downtown indianapolis & see the projects going on for all those quarter million + dollar condos & ask yourself. Downtown exemplifies 'nap' town...bored

See things haven't changed here much. A city is a city. One w/800k pkus people will have pockets of crime and pockets of poverty. Doesn't matter what city it is. Indy is no different than anywhere else. There will always be those scared to travel south of 96th or north of county line road. Been that way since I moved to central indiana 20+ years ago. You just have scary people in the world afraid of their own shadow. Use common sense and you will be fine. Indy isn't some huge warzone. It has pockets, pockets suburbanites and city dwellers tend to avoid just like residents of any other city. First rule of thumb, being out at 3 un the morning generally isn't the smartest thing to do in any environment. Inly trouble at that hour.

It's all perception, many who are scared to travel into indy doesn't flinch travelling to say New Orleans which is a heck of a lot worse on it's best day than indy is on its worst. Just how you look at it.

It depends where you are. Downtown is active near the circle/mall, Mass Ave., and Fountain Square most of the time until 11PM most nights. The CBD isn't really violent at all.

We can afford to live anywhere in the area, but we choose to live in Indianapolis. We can afford to live anywhere we want, including Carmel, Fishers, Zionsville, etc. We choose to live in Indianapolis.

This city is my home.

There should be a Hamilton County forum here on CD for those of you who hate Indianapolis and brag about being able to function without it.

I could avoid that forum (as I do Hamilton County other than once or twice a year for business), and you can all avoid the Indianapolis forum (as most of you avoid the city itself for nonsense reasons like 110 people murdered in a city of 820,000).

Seriously, get your own forum and don't worry about the real city to your south. I'm sure we will all be happier that way.

When we moved to Indianapolis, we didn't really do any research so we ended up living on the east side for about a year and never experienced anything violent or bad. I never felt scared too. We moved to Fishers because it is much closer to work.

I keep seeing people saying "south of 96th"
but isn't "south of 96th" just...Indianapolis? like, all of indianapolis?

I work on 96th and can see 465 out the window. We are technically an Indianapolis address, but are served by the Carmel police/fire departments. I've always used the interstate as the de facto border.

96th Street is the border of Hamilton/Marion County. The post office designates some areas north of 96th Street with an Indianapolis address, but that has nothing to do with the actual city and its borders.

Phrank is trolling.

No, I'm not. (though I would gladly troll, it's one of my favorite pastimes)

I seriously was under the impression that the interstate was the border of Indianapolis and then anything outside of that would be "suburbs". Given that that was my understanding can you see why I was laughing at the whole "south of 96th" thing? 96th is right by the interstate isn't it? or like, a stones throw.

I'm still not even living in Indianapolis yet (see you in three weeks).
