Two different cities, IMHO too different to compare at just face value.

Indy has a MSA [metropolitan statistical area] population of +2 million, FtW at ~1/4 of that at <550k [and that is the FtW CSA - combined statistical area; its MSA is <400k. I've been in Indy some, but to me, and this is coming from one who abhors traffic , I'd take FtW over Indy to live, work, etc. There are benefits of course to Indy - bigger/cheaper airport, more restaurants/entertainment/etc., and the other benefits of 3rd largest city in the midwest has to offer. Yet, FtW for its size is good place, offering quite a bit for its relatively smaller size. IMHO more depends on what one wants to do, how often, at what costs [financial and otherwise]. Like to visit Indy, but not my cup of tea for living there or the immediate surrounding areas.

I don't think these two cities are very comparable. Indy is much bigger. It depends what you are looking for. Indy/Columbus Ohio comparison? I could totally see that.

This isn't apples to apples at all....

You can't compare Indy with any other city in Indiana, possible fair comparisons would be with Cincinnati, Louisville, maybe St. Louis, etc..

Ft. Wayne would be better compared with Evansville, Peoria, Grand Rapids, etc..

Now that you mention it... could someone compare Peoria to Fort Wayne?

I have to agree with ShadowCaver on this. Fort Wayne is a great place to live, if you want the conveniences of the "city" but still long for a taste of the "country". All through the town with its great parks and open green areas you can see signs of the farmlands that were once there. Great places to eat, shop, too. I love to visit Indy, love its airport too, but a visit is enough.

I like how Fort Wayne has all the conveniences of a medium-large sized city but hardly any of the typical negatives. Great cost of living, great opportunity for entrepreneurs, lots to do for families, an easy airport to get into/out of, all the retail and restaurants anyone could want, and very nice people.

Indy has all of the major league sports, all of the things. It is probably the only city in Indiana that had a recovery from the Rust Belt days. Indianapolis is doing better than most places in Indiana. So it is the better city to live in.

Agree with mbuszu's points; also agree with previous posters that is not comparing "apples to apples". IMHO, Fort Wayne is a pretty decent city for raising kids/families. Big enough, but not too big. Of course, subjective to individual preferences, needs/wants, what looking for within a city or area, etc. No one place is perfect, much less is there one perfect place for everyone (that we'd all agree on). FWIW, if given the choice, I'd live in Fort Wayne & visit Indy for what I felt was missing, if anything.
