Because the Indiana Chamber of Commerce wants it that way.

The CEO of Celadon trucking threatened to leave Indiana. Mitch Daniels tried to get the whole state on the dumb eastern time zone and he failed.

I always figured it was because our former governor wanted to be able to call his Washington friends and not think about the time difference.

This group keeps plugging away at the issue. From a geography standpoint alone it makes no sense.

Because of our location, Indiana is screwed either way. People will either gripe about it being very dark when kids are waiting for the bus in winter, or they'll gripe about it getting dark at 4 p.m.

My reason for wanting to move to Central Time is TV.

I just wish the whole state was on one time zone, I don't really care which.

Actually it's so those of us in Ohio don't get to our destination in Indiana before we actually leave home.

Back when the eastern part of Indiana would go from Eastern Standard to Central Daylight time in the spring, all summer long we would leave home in Ohio at 4:00 and get to our destination in Indiana at 3:45. Very confusing.

Like grmasterb said, no matter which time zone we went to there would be people complaining. Due to the state's location, there is no true time zone. We're going to be on the extreme edge either way. My biggest reason for preferring Eastern is because in Central time, the sun would set just after 4pm in the middle of winter. That sounds awful to me. Also with Eastern time zone, we do match up with the areas to our north and south.

My favorite argument is that the state is confusing being in more than one time zone. 12 other states are in multiple time zones. And the Navajo reservation in Arizona observes daylight savings time while the surrounding state doesn't. Kansas has just 4 counties in mountain time with the rest of the state in central. Nevada has just 2 counties in mountain time with the rest of the state in pacific. Oregon has just part of one county that is in mountain. The rest of the state and the rest of the county are in pacific time. Indiana isn't the only screwed up state. But what is sad is that time zones in Indiana have been so massacred over the years that there is a special wikipedia page for it. Time in Indiana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

someone has to be on the edge of the time zones, so Indiana is it.

Part of Indiana do not follow the Daylight Savings time change and other parts do. It is just how it was decided to be done in Indiana.
