DST is stupid, but the vast majority of states observe it, so it's best we play along for consistency and logistics scheduling.

My reason for wanting to move to Central Time is TV.
For televised sports, yeah, I agree with you. Central Time Zone is way better than the Eastern Time Zone for sports.

For everything else TV-related though, Central Time doesn't quite have the advantage it used to have (IMO, anyway) for 2 reasons:

- The advent first of VCR's then DVR's, we can watch whatever we want whenever we want to; and
- The continually declining quality of late-night talk shows (let's face it, getting to watch Leno or Letterman an hour earlier isn't quite the advantage that getting to watch Carson an hour earlier would have been years ago)
