midwest1, I'm glad you're proud of NW Indiana for many good reasons. However, it isn't a viable "solution" or a feasable alternative place to live for millions of people in Chicagoland who want an alternative to IL politics/taxes. For some, it works fine though.

actually it is. NWI is less than 30 miles from the Loop which is closer than many of the western suburbs. We are purchasing a home in the Crown Point area and plan to move in before the end of May. Chicagoans need to open their minds and quit having these silly beliefs about NW Indiana that aren't based on reality. Some of our co-workers ignorance about NW Indiana was eye catching when we told them about our pending move a few weeks ago.

Crown Point is 47 miles from downtown Chicago. An hour drive in perfect traffic. No train. All the south shore train line stops put you east of Gary which is an eye sore with the US Steel plant. No one wants to live near Gary. Chicago burbs all have trains downtown (some express) and are at most 40 miles from downtown. Taxes aside I'd much rather live in Lake Forest, Naperville, Schaumburg, etc. than NWI. And again, if you're gonna pick up and move outta state pick anywhere...like beautiful North Carolina...or out West in Utah or Colorado with amazing mountains...or somewhere sunny year round like Arizona / Florida. Why oh why would you pick NWI? Speaks again to the staying power of Chicago.

I have nothing against Indiana, but I just don't find NWI to be a nice area at all. Everything there looks run down or very dated. It's like a worse version of Oak Lawn.

driving down Cicero Ave to get to Oak Lawn has got to be one of the more depressing drives I have ever done in my life, reminds me of some sort of dystopia or something, its just so hideous

You must have not done many drives in your life or ever been to Russia or Moldova. Cicero Avenue has actually improved over time. And IMO there is absolutely nothing wrong with Oak Lawn. I agree that parts of MWI are far more depressing going through Hammond, Lake Station etc. Now that is depressing.

I've been all over, including dumps like Gary (which would easily be #1)

in terms of places that aren't completely bombed out ghettos, driving down Cicero to Oak Lawn from I-55 is just straight up ugly and depressing

I remember what it was like in the 90's and not much has changed to be honest since I made the trip just last year...

Last year, I drove south on Cicero from State Road to 103rd Street. I was amazed at the number of "title loan" stores, ghetto nail/hair extension salons, payday loan shops, "cash for gold", and vape/tattoo/liquor stores I saw on that trip. Has EVERY major street in Chicago become similar to the seedy side of Vegas, or is it just Cicero Avenue?

Ford City Mall has been languishing for the past decade (at least), and after being remodeled several years ago, is up for sale and may even be shut down - it lost major anchors, and is suffering the same ills as many other large malls in the U.S., but its condition is worsened because white shoppers have largely abandoned it due to real or perceived thug presence and crime. I've got a lot of fond memories of that place from my youth in the 1960's and 70's. I bought a mattress from Carson's maybe fifteen years ago, haven't been back since. If it closes, it wouldn't surprise me if it became a cleanup headache (potential Superfund site?), it was built in the early years of WWII, and you know what that means, tons of asbestos and PCB's are likely in there. Lots and lots of history in that place, I'd give a day's pay to be able to explore the tunnels and engineering areas of it - I hope it's well-documented before the bulldozers show up.

But yeah, Oak Lawn is no longer the Oak Lawn of forty years ago. But you could say the same about me.
