FORT EDWARD - A Glens Falls man was found to be an illegal immigrant and in possession of a false license after a motor vehicle crash on Saturday, police said.

Leandro Sequeira, 21, of 99 Warren St., was driving with a false international driver's license when he fell asleep at the wheel and struck a guide wire and utility pole on Route 4 in Fort Edward, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Sequeira was not injured in the accident, but he was checked by the Immigration Department and found to be in the United States illegally, police said.

He was arrested for second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, a felony, and was issued several traffic tickets, police said.

Sequeira was arraigned in Fort Edward town court and was remanded to the Washington County Jail for lack of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond bail, according to police.

Khalid Altawarh isn't just facing prison time for allegedly attempting to kill a Plumstead woman during what police said was a three-hour torture session.

The former restaurateur from New Hope is also facing deportation.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has reason to believe Altawarh, who went by the alias "Dave Shookby," is in the United States illegally. As such, ICE filed a deportation detainer against the 37-year-old native of Jordan.

Altawarh is accused of raping, robbing, beating and attempting to kill a woman he knew well at her Plumstead home, police said.

At various times Altawarh beat the victim with a rock, held a knife to her throat, smashed her head against stone steps and tried to tie her up, among other brutal details, court papers said.

IMPERIAL BEACH – A surfer was apparently trying to catch more than a wave near the U.S.-Mexico border after he was taken into custody on suspicion of smuggling marijuana, according to the Border Patrol.

About 6 a.m. Sunday, agents at the southern end of Imperial Beach spotted the 30-year-old man paddling north on a surfboard from Mexico with a blue duffel bag in tow. The surfer released the bag and was then summoned ashore by agents, who had to pull him from the water when he refused to get out, agents said.

The Mexican citizen admitted he entered the country illegally, agents said. The bag was eventually brought to shore by the tides and agents said they found five packages of marijuana weighing nearly 25 pounds.

The drug has a street value of about $75,000.

In May, the three defendants were originally charged with transporting a juvenile undocumented alien.

A friend of the juvenile’s mother contacted the Houston Police Department in April to report the 16-year-old girl was being held against her will, physically abused and forced to work as a prostitute at several different Houston area bars. The bars included El Guerrero located on the 6400 block of Wallisville Road.

The girl who was stabbed early Sunday in East Oak Cliff while her mother was stabbed to death is recovering and has helped detectives in their investigation, Dallas police said Monday.

The girl, 6, was wounded in the neck. Police say her mother, Alma Arenas-Perez, 32, was killed by her brother-in-law, a 25-year-old illegal immigrant named Edgar Murga (upper right), who was arrested later Sunday.
