"Hyundai is now the most successful car company in the U.S. and it has the numbers to prove it. It has come up with a way to sell cars to people who fear that they will be homeless and it works."
But I think the author provides very little to support his sensationalist headline even though there's no doubt that Hyundai is improving at a screaming pace.
I think the reason Hyundai pilots are defensive is "small dog syndrome". That and they don't want to be thought of as cheap.
It's worth noting, that in the good ol' USA, cheap sells. Remember the awful 1980's Ford Escort (NA model anyway - IIRC Europe got something *much* better under the same name and general appearance..). Girlfriend at the time had one. I always wondered how it managed to put away so much fuel (22 MPG) while being so slow and small. And the damn things cracked heads like no tomorrow. But they were cheap, and so Ford shifted a lot of them.
I think the styling, design and value are excellent. They don't design 2 or 3 dozen cars so they can concentrate on making the vehicles better.
I would like to see the long term reliability through forums and Consumer Reports to see how their product holds up.
They have a lot of surface attraction. When you get into a nice car there is a lot more than what just meets the eye. I pay attention to all the details, action of the cupholder, hinges on the glove box, smoothness of the adjusting seats, the feel of the rear view mirror being adjusted, logic of the climate/entertainment control placements, action of the climate/entertainment buttons, placement of the turn signal/wiper arms and action thereof, adjustment range and action of steering column, a how easily and loud the trunk is when it pops open, action on door handles, ease of motion on the doors, how crisp/silent the doors are when they shut... thats not even getting into drivetrain and motion control of the vehicle.
They make one moderately impressive car and everyone goes goo goo gah gah.
there's certainly more than one (Sonata, Genesis sedan, Genesis coupe, Azera, etc). more importantly, more are on the horizon.
i think people are 'goo goo gah gah' not because they're making great cars, but because of how they started and how short of time it has taken them to do what they've done. you have to admit, it's a massive acheivement.
