I am sure it is a fine car, but cannot take seriously such designation that never even had a 4Runner as an SUV of the year.
Yeah, I have read Motor Trend since I was a kid in the 80s, but I canceled my subscription last year. It seems like it's been taken over by tech geeks and hipsters.
Honestly its an 'okay' design, Kind of resembles an outdated GMC Yukon and if it wasn't because the Mach-E is fully electric as opposed to PHEV, The Telluride wouldn't stand a chance.
I am sure it is a fine car, but cannot take seriously such designation that never even had a 4Runner as an SUV of the year.
In the last year I rented both a 4 runner and a Tuscon XL for a weeks trip to Pittsburgh. The user experience in the Tuscon was far superior to the 4 runner. The location of the controls for the 4 runner, especially the cruise control just sucked. The Tuscon was a joy, I cannot speak to under hood mechanics. But at 56 long trips can cause leg pain, the Tuscon was the first rental comfortable enough to drive the whole 6 hours through with no pain.
Good for Kia! Kia Hyundai and Genesis are all doing great and will start taking share from the big boys. The G70, Veloster N, and Telluride are all standout models along with the Stinger and Pallisade.

The thing is, a 4runner is an actual SUV, a Tucson is not. A 4runner, live or hate, is a superior SUV, and embraces all what an SUV is.
For it not to ever, in 20 years, to have no designation as an SUV of the year, makes the award in my opinion useless and not have any real merit.
It's not bad but I would buy the Hyundai Palisade before the Telluride because I think it's more luxurious, better looking, and would ride more comfortably on the road.
However, if I were using it for towing and more off-roading, then I would probably buy a Telluride instead.
I'm happy for Kia. The Telluride is a great, serious, end product that Kia should be proud of. It also made Car and Driver's 10Best list. I too though, like the Hyundai Palisade, as it is a twin of the Telluride. I think the Palisade has the better interior, and due to it's luxury nature, looks more expensive than the Telluride.
