Seriously, can I ask what this will really mean? Can someone give an OBJECTIVE opinion? So far I have only heard one side from one person with a vested interest, I would like to hear both sides of the coin.

From where I am I don't see what the big deal is, Madison is getting a new gas station. What are the concerns(other than property values and terrorists) and what are the pros to having this other than tax revenue?

One pro is a convenient place for me to stop and get gas on the way home.

Seriously, though, I think the only person around here who thought it was a big deal has apparently taken their football and gone home.

He promises to do extensive landscaping to buffer all affected property and assured residents they "will enjoy using it." "
Compared to a lot of other retail zones in North Alabama, this sounds pretty nice.

But will that plan include a gas station?

Even if it does, a gas station can be made to look nice. Landscaping, no gaudy signs, architecture consistent with the community, etc.

Why can't a Taco Bell (or other neighborhood fast food joint) look like this?

Money. In some areas they value aesthetics more than here.

The area we lived in Houston had a gas station just like the one you provided a picture for, we had a similar taco bell, our McDonald's had just been torn down and rebuilt the year we left(we used to have an old, ugly one). Our grocery stores had more landscaping than most entire communities in Hsv. The area that I grew up in(where my mom still lives) is also very nice with overhauls occuring regularly to keep up with the aesthetics of the times, it is great for her property value. Really it didn't/doesn't matter to me too much either way, I wasn't a regular customer of either fast food joint and didn't really care, I never really spent time watching them or paying attention although the McDonald's was pretty impressive when it was done-complete with a landscaped outdoor dining area and indoor coffee bar. I will agree with you 100% on the power lines though-they need to be buried.

Overall yes, things can look great if you spend the cash, but if you remember ion's concern wasn't the look but the actual gas station itself, its customers, and the terrorists.
