First I've heard of it.

Maybe that's part of the problem,too...there might be things and places out there that remain widely unknown. I didn't know about the Safari Park until a few days ago. I've been here since late 2007.

You mean Harmony? We went there on Sunday, raining, and the llamas licking windows, kids dropped some grain feed in the car I haven't had time to clean, now it stinks everywhere. I took the kids out of their seatbelts, and they planted themselves in my lap, and front seat, all the while driving and handing out grains to the kids, and instinctively shooing the animals away. Yeah, as some said, it was fun... crazy mess fun for me.

As I am a transplant myself, many things (including Harmony) I had discovered perusing the city's event calendar, or just driving around (mostly weekends at slow speed), and reading/locating the signs on buidings/businesses, driving off the beaten path (literally, Parkway, University and 565), and driving outside city, in semi-rural areas just to see what's out there.

PS: have cash at HArmony, $7 per person over 3 yrs old, $1 cup of feed (12oz I think), or $5 a small bucket

A new calendar for Hsv http://ourvalleyevents.com, in addition to DJMax's. (on some events, the calendars don't overlap,so two sources should be enough)

i think huntsville could defenetly handle a zoo. It would hjust need lots of local support, which most people dont want to have a part of, wen iit comes to a zoo anyways. i am all for it i lov zoos and all. i have 8 animals of my own. there is a few llocal zoos. like Harmony Park Safari (new hope/ owens cross roads) and The Tennessee Valley Zoo (athens) i just herd the tenn. valley zoo its fairly new. never been. atleast not yet... but fornow. huntsville prob wont have a zoo. maybe later if someone is reallyyy willing to do it.

I think a Zoo in Huntsville is a great ideal. Montgomery's Zoo is nice but Birminghams is Horrible and we would not recommend it to anyone!!! We drive to memphis to go to the Zoo because it is the nicest Zoo we have been to, Montgomery being 2nd. Nashville's is a disappointment as well.
Huntsville could have more family activities. There really is nothing to do when family visits except go bowling or to a movie which is in every city.
An aquarium would be super nice too. Chattanooga's is nice and we have heard Atlanta's is out of this world!
I also think an amusement park would be nice.
Huntsville has the population to do it most definitely. Besides you are attracting visitors as well. Most people have been to the Space and Rocket center and want something new!

One word, NEVER. Zoo's aren't as popular as they once were. Too much upkeep and cost.

And who wants to see beautiful wild animals cooped up in pens? Huntsville does NOT have the resources to do it correctly and the money would be better served put into education and revitalization of downtown and other areas.

Last year we found the Wildlife Safari Park in Winston, OR and that is an example of a zoo done right:

Wildlife Safari - Winston Oregon

That said, the zoo here in San Diego is extremely popular. On the other hand, the tiny living conditions at the zoo's in Japan were horrible.
