Got the Blue screen of death on my laptop yesterday. Is my computer toast, or can I take it to some shop for repair? Any recommendations, I live near downtown.

No, this is a error from the Operating System. Do you have the recovery disk?

If you can post the blue screen error, I or (we) can probably diagnose it for you for free.

Default Memory

My first guess would be memory. Have it checked, the memory that is.

Usually there is a phrasem or number (***STOP: etc) associated with the error, and there will (hopefully) be a knowledge base article on microsoft's site. Post it here and we can help google and research the problem.

@OilDog,

Blue Screen of Death can mean many things but usually it is related to drivers. What operating system you are using?

I installed Win7 on my XP machine and it was using wrong display drivers. Once, I installed the drivers compatible with Windows XP then it worked fine.

Depends upon the price of replacement. Is it worth $200 to fix a $400 computer? Dunno what your replacement cost is, but worth considering buying a new one.

Just sayin'...

Did you try just rebooting, I'm assuming you're much more computer-smart than me and did.
WHen my laptop was just 3wks old, i got the BSoD. I couldn't shut it off to reboot though, and there was a sputtering noise, sounded like the fan. Took it to a certified repair shop since it was still under warranty (if yours is still under warranty, look up the company website for free service). They replaced the fan and somehow shut it off (probably let battery run out b/c they weren't able to shut it off while I was there watching them). But they said they couldn't reproduce the BSoD to repair it. I took it home, got it again in a matter of days, wrote down the error screen, brought it back to them. Anyway, they never figured it out -btw, each time the error message was slightly different, not same error. From my googling, there are lots of suggestions out there but none worked for my situtation, apparently the BSoD is ubiquitous. After downloading some patches (suggested solutions), it got better and now I still have it about once every 2mths. No biggie, I just turn of the laptop and restart, no memory is lost. I have a Toshiba Sattelite M205, Windows Vista.
