Its an older (5 yrs) Dell that I got from an employer. They let me keep it after an upgrade, so i don't have any disks associated with it. I'm unable to shut it down as it hasn't responded to any keys. It happened once before and I took it to a place in OK that got it running for $40. The tech said it was an issue with Explorer and he installed a patch and Firefox on it. I was hoping to do the same. Maybe its just old as Ronnie mentioned. If I need to shell out a few hundred for a new one I can do that instead.

@OilDog,

Five years in technology world is like 50 years. Instead of spending money of this laptop just buy a new one. Also, you can trying installing Lunix on the old laptop. Linux is not as heavy as Windows system. You can look into the web linux installer known as Wubi. It is easy to use and it provides much of the functionality that you will need.

Wubi - Ubuntu Installer for Windows
