We are moving to Houston this spring for my husband's job. We have 3 kids and would like to move somewhere in the city with nice elementary schools and a nice neighborhood environment (parks, good library, etc).
Where do you recommend?

Also- someone told us to look at the "Heights," though I am not sure where this is or how to look it up on a map. I am having a hard time finding houses on har.com because I don't know what mls area to look in.. Please help!

PS My husband will be working near Stafford.

There are several ways to look on HAR, and a few issues you should know when searching.

The Heights is an area along Heights Boulevard inside loop 610. If you just enter Heights, however, you will get a lot of areas that have Heights in the name, but are totally different, while missing some of the areas in there that have a different legal name or are right adjacent to Heights proper, (Norhill, Woodland Heights, North Norhill, etc.)

When looking in the Heights area for example, you can look by zone, (area 9 in that case - central north) or you can go by zip code, 77007, 77008 and some of 77009 should cover all of that.

I would check some areas by zip codes and refine your search from there.

Stafford is SW, so you might check some areas around Meyerland as well.

It really depends on what you can spend. Especially if you are talking living "in the city" in an area with good schools. There are plenty of areas like West University Place that fit the bill perfectly, but areas like that can get quite expensive.

What is your price range?
If your husband will be working in Stafford and you want to be close in to the city, the Meyerland, Maplewood, Marylin Estates, Bellaire area might be right for you. The Heights would involve some of the worst traffic to commute through (Galleria area) to get to Stafford so give that some thought. On HAR try searching sip codes 77025, 77035, 77096, and 77401 (Bellaire). There are some less savory areas in those zips too so be vigilant. Alternatively, if you want to be further out of the city proper you might look in the Sugarland area. If you still want to give the near north side and Heights a look, also look at Timbergrove and Lazybrook. Zips will be 77008, 77009, and 77007.

Default thanks!

you gave us a lot to look at. the heights are way too far, so those are voted out. meyerland and the other areas look much closer.

we'd like a house that is around what we have (1500 sq ft) or of course bigger ha ha. right now we are in a 50's split level that was $525K so we'd like something similar in price. i have heard that lamar and bellaire are good high school, so i am assuming they each have some good elem schools feeding them.

is west univ place out of our price range? we don't mind if we're the smallest on the block. are there young families or at least young kiddos in the areas mentioned? is $525 unrealistic?

If your husband is working in Stafford and you want a family friendly area with good schools I would recommend you look in Sugarland.

I second that. Sugar Land isn't in the city but definitely has "nice elementary schools and a nice neighborhood environment (parks, good library, etc)." We live in New Territory in Sugar Land and we love it. First Colony in Sugar Land is nice, too.

Sugar Land (two words in case you are searching on HAR.com) is right next to Stafford.
