I stole this idea from the Atlanta thread about things people wanted to see in Atlanta such as more public transit, bigger skyline, and more monuments.

What type of things would you guys like to see in Houston??

I was coming back from Waco one night and noticed how huge and monsterous the highways was driving down I-45. I always though it would be cool if the overpasses and bridges had like Christmas lights on the sides of them to make the highways more....prettier??? I know the highways are one of the cons of Houston, but since we got them we might as well make em fierce!

Would love to see more rail, and bike trails! I live 4 mi from office, but can't bike in to work b/c too dangerous

And since we're fantasizing, I'd take down all the billboards looming over our highways and freeways

Houston does overdo it with the billboards especially along I-45.

1. RAIL.
2. More public space, less outdoor shopping malls.
3. A cap on the number of auto shops. I mean, beejeezus.
4. I can live without zoning, but I'd like to see commercial property owners being fined for not keeping up their properties. Too many eyesores, too many blighted areas.
5. Absolutely NO billboards.
6. Trees along ALL freeways to hide the businesses.
7. More historic preservation.
8. Okay, zoning.
9. RAIL.

and most of all on my Houston wish list...

10. Deannexation.

Building a skyscraper taller than the Sears or Freedom Towers and the completion of annexation of the whole ETJ.

Speaking of highways, how about making them into the Brady Bunch style like in California? The West Loop should have been declared a historical landmark after seeing that 1960's picture in Houston Freeways. 40 years ago it was suburbia and now it's very urban and one of the toniest addresses in town.

I don't think all the folks from NO are gangbangers. Many have already returned. You seem to be obsessed with New Orleans transplants, based on all your posts.

I like to see, which is similar to some others posted:

1. Amusement Park (six flags or something similar)
2. a nicely lit skyline (just seems kind of dim compared to other big cities)
3. Expanded public transportation (commuter rail, more park and rides, etc.)
4. sidewalks, sidewalks, and more sidewalks (Houston area is a deathtrap for pedestrians)
5. No more annexation ( i mean really, 600sq miles is big enough for the city)
6. at least make the billboards look cool. (aka vegas strip type thing)
7. more parks, trails, etc. (plenty of open space for that)
8. Less chain stores, restaurants, etc and more mom and pop type choices.

Less MPC's 90 minutes out of town clogging up the major arteries
Rail from the MPC's into major employment areas. Not many who live IN town will use them.
Less old apartment complexes inside the Beltway.
NO MORE ANNEXATION.
No more production builders sneaking their crap build, garage in the front McMansions into established neighborhoods.
More use of the bayou surrounds like Terry Hershey Park
