A friend of mine is coming from Europe in September and has asked me to take him to a bar when he comes. Apparently he likes to visit bars in each city he goes to.

He doesn't like the whole Texas-Honky-Tonk type, but something with decent drinks (beer, mixed, martinis, etc), laid back, 30's range group. I'm guessing he'll want to hear music, but nothing really loud kind of back-ground but not loungy.

I'm located in NW Houston up 290.

Thanks!

Been to those!

I don't really do the bar scene, so I have no clue what's really out there other than the bar sections at the resturaunts.

I will say the bartender at Johnny Carino's in Katy makes a chocolate espresso martini that will kick your butt in no time! Or maybe I'm just a lightweight lol

Try midtown - upscale and average bars that you might like. I like Komodo - kind of a pub feel in a small older home -- just a fun place to kick back. NOt sure what street - it is right off of west gray.

If you're coming downtown, take him to Warren's and La Carafe. Depending on the night, loud would be found around the corner at notsuoH.

Yelp will have reviews of more bars.

Thanks!! I'll scope them out and see what looks like something he'd like to go to. I will check out "yelp" too.

Also go to 002mag.com or 002magazine.com - not sure which it is.

I recommend bars in Rice Village or Midtown for bars/clubs you will typically find in any big city. Montrose has some eclectic bars/clubs as well as a huge cluster of gay bars.

Also check out the Washington Blvd. area. There are a ton of newer bars and clubs springing up nearly daily. Somebody left a link to 002 magazine and that is a great tool of reference. Choose wisely, there are a ton of bars and clubs here.

My European friends tend to like starting the night out at a wine bar, then going to a bar for cocktails and finally winding up at a club. I honestly couldn't even tell you wear a "Texas honky tonk" is at, but then again I live in the city and not way out in suburbia. Happy commuting!

Midtown is a good bet...check out Maple Leaf Pub, DogHouse Tavern, or WetSpot for places that are more popular with 30'somethings...but are not exclusive.

Try Citizen Lounge, it's a nice spot located off of Washington.
