Yep, as it seems...

Go down I-45 or Hwy 3 from the Beltway to El Dorado and you'll see a lot of nothing. You're looking at grazing land, oil fields and Ellington Field. Another "black hole" as they say. Hence the rep, perhaps. However the real black hole isn't referred to as xurb either.

BTW new Sugar Land out 59/99 where everything is painted the same is xurb. However the part I grew up in for awhile was there before my baby-boomer parents were born, and was largely independent of Houston for a good long time.

Yeah, I tend to think that as time goes on, exurb is used more to disparage "not-close-in" neighborhoods built in the last 20-30 years.

Default wood

I totally disagree with the statement that anything that has wood in the name is some stupid suburb of Houston.Friendswood has been Friendswood since 1890 and many orignal families still live here along with new ones.My grandparents moved here and had a fig farm in 1879.This town has alot of history along with Houston so get the facts straight !

Inner-ring suburbs, outer-ring suburbs, suburbs, exurbs, etc... they're all real words and concepts: Commuter town - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Houston and other sunbelt cities are anomalies in the way they have developed (and continue to develop) and are organized vs. the way cities traditionally develop(ed). Houston in particular is largely unplanned chaos and there is vastly more "suburb" than "urban" here, so the definitions don't always fit exactly, but close enough.

I am a mommy to a 2.8 yr old daughter named Avery too!

My favorite area would be any of the villages in Memorial.

Houston is a big town with lots of great areas. I live in Longwood, in Cypress, so of course I think Cypress is a great place to live with many neighborhood choices and two different geographies depending on your preference (North Cypress is heavily wooded, South Cypress is Katy Prairie). It's relatively new, with most development having taken place over the past decade or so...Lots of land, green spaces, good schools and a laid back lifestyle.

We also have our own Alamo...

Here are some pics: Flickr: longwood_cypress' Photostream

As for the rest of Houston, I very much like the obvious favorites: River Oaks, West U, Tanglewood, Memorial, Briargroves, etc.

I also like Champions, Klein, The Woodlands, and Kingwood.

Here is a current example of why I would give Shadyside the best "if money were no object" slot:

2 Longfellow Ln, Houston, TX 77005
