Hello all,

Recently accepted a new position that is downtown and it’s my first time having to go that far from Katy on a daily basis. A friend informed me of the Grand Parkway P&R which seems like it would be amazingly convenient compared to driving in the regular lanes or paying tolls. Any fellow Katy citizens care to comment yay or nay on whether this is a good idea?

Thanks!

Take the P&R. It will save you money over time instead of paying for surface/garage parking (even with employer-provided free parking, a rarity for Downtown companies), the cost of gas and wear-and-tear on the car, and the stress of rush-hour freeway traffic especially on the Katy Freeway.

The Kingsland P&R is still operating and actually has midday service in case of an emergency back home (don't want to use up your guaranteed ride home limits).

Better take advantage of this alternative since most Houstonians are forced to drive to their non-Downtown workplaces in this sprawly city!

My wife loves the Park and Ride... at least when she can get a seat. Then she gets a good power nap in.

I only have personal experience with the Addicks P+R. It's amazing. Always plenty of parking available, always 1-2 buses ready to leave (during rush hour at least), and front-door service to many downtown buildings. The P+R network in Houston is by far the most underrated component of our much-maligned mass-transit network.

I imagine that the Grand Parkway P+R is similar, although it would take considerably longer to get downtown since you're further out. Still beats the heck out of driving.

One alternative that you may want to check into is Metro Star. If there's a group that commutes from your neighborhood, you might be able to skip driving to the P+R and have an even more direct route to downtown.

Grand parkway P&R is awesome. Been using it daily for last 3 years. Without the P&Rs (this and Kingsland), I would never move to Katy since I work downtown. The Grand Parkway very recently opened up their multi-storied garage and now its all covered parking. Really convenient for those rainy days when you could stay completely dry if you have your car parked at the garage at home.

Instead of from Grand Parkway, we utilize the Park & Ride service between downtown and West Little York on 290. It is indeed very convenient, and the Park & Ride buses are quite plush and comfortable. I think you'll find it a good option.
