Hi Everyone,

I'll be in Texas in less than 2 weeks and getting ready for my new life in Houston.

One of my top things to do is to buy or adopt a dog.

Any places where I can purchase or adopt a Chihuahua, pug, Daschund, Boston Terrier?

Thanks!

Try petfinder.com
you can narrow down your search and it includes all shelters and rescues in the zip code you specify. I have had sucess there as well as many friends and family all over the states and in Canada.

Good Luck!

The Houston SPCA is a great place. My daughter loves animals and she goes to their Critter Camp. We've also taken training classes there with our dogs. I know that the small dogs and puppies get adopted very very quickly so you may need go there and talk to them. I have no idea if they have waiting lists or whatever. Also, if you know a breed that you're interested in, I would look for the breed specific rescues groups in Houston. I know there are a lot. Good Luck

Don't underestimate the classifieds in the basic paper...in this case, the Houston Chronicle, either. I bought our family dog that way. I found an unpapered, but clearly authentic, Australian Shepherd pup for $ 35. One couldn't have asked for more happiness, dollar for dollar, from that purchase.

On Fri afternoon there were about 8 Dachshunds in one run at the Galveston county shelter in Texas City, 2 puppies in a cage, and 1 quarantined. Not sure what the story is on those -- you could call and ask about them. They had some other little dogs, too, including a couple Chihuaua-Pug looking mixes.

Obviuosly the local shelters are great places. You can also go to Traders Village, they always have breeders out there. I got my Bichon Frise there and my friend got her mini shnauzer and rat terrier out there.

Adopt a dog, don't buy one. They are better pets, they seem to know you saved them. Houston SPCA. Or adopt from a rescue league devoted to a specific breed.

Found a little lost dog today - very thin but healthy, playful and sweet - looks like a cross between a daschund and a chihuahua or minpin. Trying to find the owner - if I haven't found an owner in about two weeks then he'll be available for adoption.

Many shelters are participating in a "Have a Heart" adoption program Feb 14-18. Adoptions will be half price. Most vets will even give you a free intial checkup and round of shots if you adopt
