I guess that's true and a good idea, if you are not proactive on maintenance and making sure ALL of the drain lines are clear every so often.

Where do you suggest they put them?
I do have to agree about the water heaters in the attic. I replace them myself - with a little help, and I dread the day I have to replace the two 40 gal ones in my attic. That is two flights of stairs! But otherwise it would take up a good 6 x 3 foot closet on the ground floor.

Our first house had the AC unit in a closet by the door to the garage. While it was "convenient", the only time I opened the door was to light the pilot on the gas furnace. This was before the automatic electronic ignitors. The bad thing was we certainly heard the fan in the house when it turned on. Since I have two AC units, having them in a closet would take up even more room. I would need another space about 8 x 3 or so to house the two units and the extra ductwork. I don't worry about the AC in the attic since I won't ever be replacing them myself. But I bet most AC contractors would prefer to have the main units NOT in the attic!

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the comments. At least now I know the prices quoted aren't high due to the cost of the parts, its all labor.
