I just moved into a new apartment, upon moving in and actually living here I've noticed a couple things (chipped trim at built in computer station, etc) are these things I can have the maint. staff fix? I love the place and it's brand new, so it was obviously missed on the final walk through of the unit.. Are things like that regarded "as is"?

I would have it noted so you aren't charged for it when you move out. Far as requesting it be fixed... I would use your best judgement. I wouldn't want to call maintenance for every little thing, some wear and tear is going to be normal.

Construction issues are typically treated "as is." You should note them on your move in inspection checklist so you are not charged for them, but unless they are things that substantially affect your living experience, maintenance shouldn't be called for them.

I strongly urge you to take photos or video of any discrepancies you find and also make a list. Make a DVD of the photos/video and put it in a safe place. Present your written list to your manager and keep a journal of your residency. Try to correspond via email and save every bit of it. Document everything you can. It will pay off when you leave, trust me.

Ask the management. Maybe they say yes. Or they say no and you're no worse off than you are now.

When you document this and give a copy to your landlord be sure that they sign off on it. Get a copy with their signature and the date (and yours) for your records and be sure to have it available upon move out.
