I was thinking it might be a good idea to give newcomers a few tools and shortcuts we use in our daily lives as Houstonians to make their transition to this behemoth town of ours a tad bit easier.

One thing I thought of was http://www.houstontranstar.org/ Never leave the house without checking the Real-Time Traffic Map first, at least for the first six months or so. Soon enough, you'll learn alternate routes and figure out when to drive and when not to!

Your turn! Contribute your sage advice, hints, tips and tricks, or recommendations gleaned from living here over the years. Let's make it good and maybe it'll become a sticky!

Well I have learned from my first year of living here to always have an umbrella in the car for those unexpected afternoon rainshowers.

Or if you're of the more ambitious type, leave before 6am and come back after 7pm.

In addition to the driving tips here, make sure your car is in tip-top condition, and don't run out of gas please! In other words, traffic delays caused by idiocy are not nice!!!

FIRE ANTS. learn a bit about them, their bite is like a bite from a bigger insect only theres plenty of them to shake off when they find you. they will bite when you try to flush them off your skin with water (i've experimented).

http://harris-tx.tamu.edu/fireant/index.htm (broken link)

take notice of the many mini colonies where you see manicured lawns, especially outside subdivision lawns. this seem to be their time of the year. (tell your nannies) dont let the kids roll down them grassy slopes

For the inside of your house, an economy size can of roach spray is a very good thing to have on hand as well, mainly in the summer months.
