What's the best radio station to listen to get traffic updates 'round the clock?

One thing I thought of was http://www.houstontranstar.org/ Never leave the house without checking the Real-Time Traffic Map first, at least for the first six months or so. Soon enough, you'll learn alternate routes and figure out when to drive and when not to!

Your turn! Contribute your sage advice, hints, tips and tricks, or recommendations gleaned from living here over the years. Let's make it good and maybe it'll become a sticky!

Ericka, I'd say 740 and 950 AM are your best bets for traffic updates.

Default convertible cars and bugs

I also don't suggest having your windows down when driving through heavily wooded areas because they're waiting to swoop in your car.

So, are convertible cars enjoyable to drive in the Houston area ???

Getting around: I like the Key Map book and of course mapquest or randmcnally to figure out your route before heading out. Apply for an EZ Pass to save time and let you get on toll roads where it's required.

Regarding the fire ants -- don't do lawn care in sandals or without gloves -- my husband learned that the hard way when he disturbed a mound. You can buy a bag of fire ant stuff to sprinkle on the mounds or have your exterminator treat them. I also got bit just sitting at a park bench. It might not be a bad idea to add this product to your first aid kit: Sting Zapper -- Fire Ant First Aid Gel. I had to head directly to the drugstore when I got bit because the bite was so painful and that was just from one bite.

Get yourself a good mini fold-out map so that you can orientate yourself to the main freeways and sides roads.

Get Telenav or SatNav on your BlackBerry, not in your car.

First day, introduce yourself to the neighbors - don't complain if they didn't visit you as they already have busy lives and probably work full-time. Do it the first day and you're done and have instantly made one new contact/friend/helper.

Join meetup.com to find new friends in real life.

Fill the car with gas and keep $20 in it for an emergency - we drive most places so it's good to have that money handy if the pump doesn't take your debit card.

Recycle the moving boxes.

Eat/shop/exercise at a different place everyday for two weeks until you find your perfect fit.

Join the YMCA.

Get out and have fun - after all, no one else knows you've arrived!

Good luck.
