Lately hearing about residential robberies in this part of city. Any idea If they are happening in selected residences, where security systems are not installed, or also in homes of owners despite paying for the the so called "Security"

Of what I know of of past Sugar Land area robberies, there have been two types. 1) The completely random, quick smash and grab opportunity robbery. Having a security system is a huge deterrent to these types of robberies. Having said that, even having just a sign in the yard is probably good enough. 2) Targeted robberies of families of Indian descent who are business owners. These robbers case out both the home and business, determine when the home is empty to figure out the most opportune time to strike. Usually, in this instance an alarm is not going to stop them. Also, non-business owning Indian families are targeted because they tend to (stupidly) keep lots of expensive jewelry in their home. With the price of gold trending the way it has, it's just asking for trouble. The thieves know this, and they also know that most of the Indian families in the area are not armed, so risk is also less.

I would say that your risk is alot less if you aren't Indian. If you are Indian, keep your jewelry in a bank and get security monitoring. If you are a business owner (especially retail), always watch the cars behind you coming home.

Also, if you're a pet person, consider going to a shelter/rescue and adopting a large breed dog. (don't go to a pet store or breeder, for several reasons).
Cops have told me this is often even a better deterrent than any alarm.

They also target small business owners because they tend to have more cash in their house. Typically too cheap to buy a good heavy safe. Jewelry too.

Do you mean burglaries - home break-ins while the residents aren't home - or actual robberies? The former can be deterred and prevented to a certain extent, but the latter is more serious and may mean the area is trending downhill. For what it costs to get in these neighborhoods nowadays, you would think the police would provide better services.

Home invasions are extremely rare. I think I've heard of a couple in the last 5 years, but those invasions were carefully planning and targeted. The normal family isn't going to have that happen.

Burglaries are more commonplace, and happen when no one is at home.

get an alarm, quality deadbolts/strike plates and maybe a CCTV system if it really bothers you, area is safe overall. SLPD responds to alarms in 2-3 minutes. A couple guys targeted a family in Telfair a few months back because the robbers knew the owner had cash, occasional driveway robbery in New Territory. SLPD may put up licence plate and PTZ cameras around Telfair eventually.

Thanks JaqueCosto. This info puts me at ease. Got the ADT alarm system. We are not one of those to put cash or jewellary @ home. Hope the thiefs somehow can know this.
