Hello Houston residents,

I currently reside in San Diego, ca, but just got a job offer at a hospital in Houston. Is Houston a nice place? What are the best areas? My job is in downtown Houston. I would not mind commuting up to 20 miles. I am looking for good areas to buy a home. My salary is $150k, so I want a home less then 400,000. Any good advice?

Sugar Land, Sienna Plantation. Even though we do not have state income tax, we have high property taxes. Stick closer to under $350K - you will still be pleasantly surprised what you get for the money, compared to SD.

I'd start with a real estate website to search for homes. Enter a price range, city/town name, other choices and see what turns up. With handy location info, do some research or ask about a particular area in this thread. At your salary and price spec above, you might be kindly surprised at what you can get. And probably in a good neighborhood without even asking.

Har.com is the best, start there. And now they have a beta version which overlays school zones, priceless.

First, make sure you will be working Downtown and not in the Medical Center.

The Medical Center is larger than downtown LA, or San Diego, for that matter and can easily be confused as Houston's downtown.

With that salary, you will be able to find a nice place to live but first check where you will be working.

Houston is a great place to live! Forbes crowned it the #1 coolest city in America last year (certainly not related to temperature).

Are you interested in one of the planned residential communities in the suburbs of Houston? There's a site that lists all of them in the area: Houston Master Planned Communities and Planned Neighborhoods: HAR.com.

Third to recommend www.har.com over any other site in the whole USA. Keeps winning best consumer site year after year after year. Everytime another city's site comes close to catching up, HAR goes several better. Truila, zillow, etc. have a lot of guesswork and incomplete info. HAR is facts and current info.

20 miles can take an hour in this city. What time are you willing to spend in the car v. Mileage?

Houston being a nice place to live is very subjective. Opinions vary from it being the "coolest" city in America to the nickname Hellston.
