City planners not budging on new bar & restaurant parking rules: Is H-Town's national cred in danger? - 2013-Jan-31 - CultureMap Houston

Well, since we're not going to have any sort of proper urban transit anytime in any of our lifetimes, I guess we can tear down more stuff and pave it over.

The time for Houston to decide whether it wants to be bigtime or not is here, and the answer seems to be not.

Houston will screw itself if it fails to plan for the future. It didn't plan for the present 40 years ago and we are still suffering. I went to go see Stomp this past weekend downtown and searched FOREVER to find a parking spot. One of the things I love about LA and Chicago is ample parking. Parking garages, parking lots, etc. I will say Minute Maid has it figured out. Reliant has it figured out. Discovery Green and the George R. Brown has it figured out. There is parking in that area. NOW, Theater District HAS NOT. Museum District has not. Most of Downtown has not figured out the parking.

We have to plan for the future or we will never command the respect that is heaped on cities like Dallas or Chicago or Miami or even Austin. We must seize the moment. We are the focus of every potential big employer and every person looking for low income tax rates and every New Yorker tired of paying $4,000 a month for a 400 sq. ft. apartment. :-) Come on Houston, YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

You don't want to have a bunch of ugly surface parking lots. You want garages under buildings or underground. And street spaces. The theater district does have a lot of parking, like under Bayou Place, is that not there anymore?

If there is one thing Houstonians shouldn't be able to complain about, it's lack of parking. Every east coast city gets by with less parking per person and frankly bars should be completely exempt from parking given there's no reason to associate drinking and driving. If the neighborhoods are complaining, create a parking permit system or pay for street parking (pittsburgh is doing this quite successfully) and use the money to repair the GD sidewalks.

There are dozens of parking lots downtown, park in one of them and walk to the theatre district. Reliant has alot of parking, but its a complete cluster to get in and out of.

You either aren't looking hard enough, because Houston is flooded with parking lots OR you just don't want to walk an extra block to your destination.

What Houston DOES NOT need is more parking lots!

Then I shall complain about the lack of good public transportation that creates this situation.

That's another one we better fix, and quick. I meet a lot of transfers in my profession and the main complaint from those who come from good public transit towns is that not only is Houston lacking, the populace is extremely anti-public transportation.

Are you being serious? I've gone downtown many a times and rarely have a problem finding parking. I'm sorry but parking in Chicago is crazy expensive and downright hard to find if you want free parking at night. In Houston I usually find free parking on the street. You won't have that luxury in busy areas of Chicago. One time it took me a half hour to find a spot in Chicago. It usually takes me no more than 5 minutes, 10 minutes at most in Houston.

Houstonians definitely take the ample amount of parking they have for granted. Even in San Diego, which is a pretty spread out city in California terms, seems harder to find parking in than Houston.
