Am considering purchasing BASIC cable for an impoverished relative - what is the cheapest service for basic that there is in the Houston area - cable or dish, doesn't matter - just so that they can see some TV. They get zero TV without some sort of cable or dish. When you're poor, you don't have money to go out for entertainment so some TV might be nice.

Where do they live?
Can they just get free TV with an antenna?

Type in their zip code here and see what channels they can get

On 1 tv, we have just a plain ol antenna. It looks like a piece of paper 8x10 but it is plastic. We get all local channels but 11 very well.

At one time when we had Time Warner, I called and said all I wanted was basic antenna TV. It was $9 a month. They could not provide it. I got their basic 29 dollar package, for $9 a month for years. When Comcast bought them, Comcast was not aware of my deal, so they said i had been stealing cable.

Ask the cable company what is the cheapest they have.

Purchase a powered antenna and mount it as high up as possible. I get about 55 channels in the bedroom and guest room doing that.

They have an antenna and can't get a picture on any channel ........ their townhome fronts a busy street and apparently for some odd reason, every time a car passes by (which is every 3-5 minutes) it messes with their signal and they lose it.

This is what should be done for a quick solution.

If you really want some variety, get a FTA satellite dish. You can get several channels across the globe for free.

A better antenna doesn't do much,
for a long time I used a metal hanger and it worked just fine.
I bought a nice antenna and it worked the same as the hanger.... except that it came with an amplifier that really helps.
Try putting the antenna in a better location and using an amplifier.

I'd buy them a library card -- they can get just about any movie / tv show from the library free of charge.
